Ken Willoughby and Space Lectures are delighted to confirm that the next astronauts coming to Pontefract this fall are Rhea Seddon and Robert "Hoot" Gibson. One of the first six women selected for NASA's astronaut corps in 1978, Dr. Seddon is a veteran of three space shuttle flights. She served as a mission specialist on space shuttle flights STS-51D in 1985 and STS-40 in 1991 and as payload commander in charge of all science activities on her final flight, STS-58, in 1993. This brought her total time in space to 30 days. Retired U.S. Navy Captain Gibson is an aeronautical engineer, test pilot, world aviation record holder and veteran of five space shuttle missions. Selected by NASA in the same class as his future wife, he flew as pilot of STS-41B in 1984 and then commanded STS-61C in 1986, STS-27 in 1988, STS-47 in 1992 and STS-71, the first Shuttle-Mir docking, in 1995. Gibson has logged 36 days in space. Married in 1981, Seddon and Gibson were the first astronaut couple and they produced the first official "astrotots." Both are inductees in the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, Gibson in 2003 and Seddon in 2015. Details of the event are as follows: - Friday, 12 October 2018:

Yet another first for Ken and Space Lectures. The first married couple to fly.Charlie Bolden has gone on record as saying that John Young and "Hoot" Gibson were in his opinion the finest pilots he'd ever seen. "They don't fly their aircraft... they wear them!" Roll on October. |

They're an outstanding pair. I've met dozens of shuttle astronauts, and I rate Hoot in particular at number one. For anyone who hasn't met them, I wouldn't even consider missing the opportunity. |

Last saw them back in 2014 at Autographica, this is what I had to say then:"Only attended one lecture, Rhea and Hoot and they were just that (a hoot). Hoot joked that he'd had twenty good years of marriage (they have been married 33 years). They were slick, a great double act. Nice tidbits of info regarding their missions and patches. It was over too soon and no time for Q&A... 5 star value." We get the chance for all this and more in October, can't wait. |

I've never met Rhea (I loved her book, though) but I have spent a fair amount of time around Hoot at Huntsville. Not only is he an amazing pilot and astronaut, he's a very nice person. Really down to earth, has no problems with questions (no matter how silly) and has a great sense of humor. A total class act, that man. If you ever get the chance to meet him, do so. Characters like him don't come around very often in life. |

As per usual with two speakers, each ticket entitles the holder to TWO autographs: one from each. |

I presume that it was Mrs OWL who communicated with 'Hoot' to arrange this one. Like Spaceman, I thoroughly enjoyed their presentation at Autographica — highly recommended. |

I would like to invite collectSPACE members to submit to this thread, their ideas, designs or mock ups for the green screen photo shoot back drop for the Gibson and Seddon Space Lectures event in October.Ken Willoughby will decide which design is used and the winning designer will receive, courtesy of Space Lectures a bespoke event photo signed by both Hoot Gibson and Dr Rhea Seddon. In the event the winning design does not originate from collectSPACE, I will personally see to it that the best alternate submitted to the thread still receives a signed photo. Ladies and gentlemen, fire up your Photoshop... |

Many UK members I'm sure follow Space Lectures' activities on the Twitter account. The account has come in for unwarranted "aggressive" attacks from rogue new followers.Mrs OWL who runs the Twitter account has reported the issue to Twitter and taken steps to address the problem. She will continue to Tweet but as a consequene of the attack it will not be possible to retweet posts in the short term though she expects normal service to be be resumed shortly. |

Ken has asked me to remind folks who may have contacted him to reserve seats for the October Gibson-Seddon event that seats will be allocated only when payment has been made. Thanks in advance. |

Shouldn't be too long now. I think Ken is waiting for everybody who requested tickets to send payment before mailing them out. The sooner folks settle up the sooner the tickets will be on their way. |

I am not privy to the financial arrangements Ken Willoughby has with Hoot Gibson and Rhea Seddon for the October Space Lectures event, but typically Ken makes installments beginning some months ahead of time. With that in mind can people planning on attending the event, and yet to purchase their tickets please do so? Thank you in advance. |

Hoot Gibson and Rhea Seddon featured in the excellent new UK Channel 5 shuttle documentary this evening. "The Space Shuttle: Triumph & Tragedy." Part II is on the same time next week. Get it on catch up if you missed it. |

Managed to finally catch part II of the Channel 5 "Shuttle Triumph and Tragedy" documentary from Monday last.I could not help but notice Hoot Gibson's claim that he personally ended the Cold War. Might make for an interesting Q&A in October! |

It is my understanding that Ken Willoughby is due to make a deposit payment to Hoot Gibson and Rhea Seddon for the Otober event to proceed. Now would be a good time to purchase tickets if you plan on attending. You know it makes sense! |

A rare occasion for the UK that mustn't be missed. People who meet them and hear what they have to say will be left astounded by their experiences. Hoot Gibson! Dr Rhea Seddon! What a perfect way to spend some time up North. It would be a real shame to miss out on this. |

URGENT UPDATESpace Lectures has been bringing inspirational astronaut speakers to the UK for more than ten years now: Jim Lovell, Ken Mattingly and Charlie Duke to name but three. Ken and his team are already looking to next year with a number of names "in the frame." But we are sorry to have to inform you that this year's event due to be held on Friday/Saturday 12th/13th October has been cancelled. While in the US, Dr Rhea Seddon and Hoot Gibson are in high demand, inexplicably ticket sales for the event in October have been poor. So following consultation with our astronaut guests the decision was made reluctantly, and with a heavy heart to cancel. As one of the team remarked, "We have missed an unbelievable opportunity." The mechanics of these events require significant payments in advance, and while ticket sales would in all likelihood have increased as the event drew ever closer the financial exposure for both parties was simply too high. Therefore, on behalf of Ken and the team, I would like to apologise for the disappointment, especially to those who may have made travel and accommodation plans… but circumstances have conspired against us. Ken will begin sending refunds in the next few days. A huge thank you to everybody for supporting our events: we have had disappointments in the past but have always bounced back and so it will be again. The wheels are in motion already for 2019 and all being well Space Lectures will soon announce an Astronaut speaker for the spring so watch this space. |

That's such a shame. I wasn't going to be there (I was just in the UK in May) but it's too bad that the event won't go on. quote: Originally posted by Rick Mulheirn: As one of the team remarked, "We have missed an unbelievable opportunity."

As a very small cog in the Space Lectures team I will be very sad at missing the opportunity not just of being able to hear the two inspirational speakers from the shuttle era but also receiving a hug from Mrs Owl. Roll on 2019... |

This is really a disappointing announcement. I had been looking forward to what I am sure would have been another fantastic event. I am glad I was able to meet Dr Rhea and Hoot a few years ago at Autographica and I'm worried that the, unbelievable, lack of interest in hearing from shuttle astronauts could see Space Lectures going the same way as Autographica.Hopefully 2019 will see Ken and his team get the support they deserve. |

Ken has been heartened by the number of folks who have asked him to simply roll over their tickets payment for October to next spring's event. But ticket prices are dictated by the the speaker's fee and almost inevitably April's ticket prices will differ... which would get a bit messy with part refunds and so on.So in the interests of Ken's sanity he would prefer to send full refunds and start again for the new year. |

Very disappointing news as having seen them once I know it would have been a memorable lecture.I have to admit to being guilty of not ordering my ticket but the reason was that I am awaiting an operation on my upper spinal chord a little before the date of the event and couldn't be sure of being fit enough to attend. I was however hoping that I would be and able to obtain one at late notice. Deepest regards to Ken and all of you at Space Lectures and hopefully will be able to go to your next presentation next year. |
