collectSPACE Space race on Earth: Astronauts compete in 2,000-mile road rallyA new international space race is set to launch between astronauts from the United States, Brazil, France and India. But instead of blasting off for the moon or Mars, the space explorers have traded in their rockets for minivans and are racing from Connecticut's capital to Florida's Space Coast. Former space shuttle astronaut Jon McBride is hitting the road against Marcos Pontes, the first Brazilian astronaut, first Frenchman in space Jean-Loup Chretien and Rakesh Sharma, India's first cosmonaut, in the 9th annual Fireball Run. Dubbed this year the "Space Race," the rally is an 8-day, 2,000-mile (3,200 km) trivia game, where the United States serves as the game board. |

I just got back about 11 p.m. Sunday and just finished for the most part organizing stuff after two hours. Myself and two other cS'ers were at the Chester, Md. (Queen Anne's County) finish line. With pope traffic and some getting lost, they all started to arrive between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. (with check-in originally scheduled for between 4:00 and 6:00.) There were tasks to complete after checking in but all four — Sharma arrived first, then Chretien, Pontes and McBride — afterward mingled outside with people and were very approachable. There was a dinner afterward, which I did not attend. Of course, the real reason for Fireball Run is to raise awareness of missing children - so if you're on Twitter, please retweet and share the missing children posters from my feed, using the hashtags #missing and #haveyouseenme. Some photos I took are also on my feed. I hope to post those posters on my Facebook profile as well. |

In the above photo of Pontes, he can be seen handing out a trading card (and the patch co-designed by Tim can be seen on his flight suit as well.) At the stop in Chester, Md. — and presumably at future stops — organizers were selling ($10) a large size card (maybe the size of four trading cards arranged 2x2?) showing all four astronauts participating in this year's Fireball Run. There was a small space for their signature underneath their portrait (blue background, so a gold or silver Sharpie would work best), so that people who wanted their signature could get it without having to resort to using a piece of paper. Of slightly different design (I think) were the four individual trading cards given out by the astronaut themselves, or their driver. This is the obverse and this is the reverse of those cards. (Jon McBride's card is not shown because he left his in the vehicle and also had to check in, and I could not wait for him.) Almost none of these cards will be a grade of 10 or even 9, since they were carried in pockets. In Pontes' case, he carried them and signed them unasked. |

Hart, thank you again for providing a detailed update for the Chester, MD stop! We weren't able to make it yesterday unfortunately. |

I had a nice time chatting with the four Fireball Run astronauts during their stopover in Queen Anne's County in Maryland. They were very amenable to autographs and liked the photographs that I brought. After the stop at the QAC Visitor's Center, many went to the nearby Fisherman's Inn and had a great seafood feast. It was five stars. If you have a chance to visit a Fireball Run destination this week, I highly recommend doing so. The main purpose of this road race is to bring awareness of missing children. I have several flyers that I will post in my hometown. |

I traveled to Williamsburg, VA to see the Fireball Run 2015 activities. About four blocks of streets were closed to traffic in order to allow visitors an opportunity to view the exhibits that were set up and to allow the cars of Fireball Run to come in and park. A local radio station was broadcasting live and a group of cheerleaders from a local school were present. NASA had stands set up at several locations and there was a 1950's car show set up.The cars began arriving at about 4:30 p.m. and continued to arrive until about 5:45 p.m. A table was set up for the four astronauts to sign autographs, however due to the later than planned arrival they were only able to sign for about 20 minutes prior to the banquet at 6:30 p.m. at Legacy Hall. Autographs were restricted to a printed card with a picture of each of the astronauts that was available for purchase plus one personal item for each astronaut. After the festivities ended I stopped by a local restaurant and celebrated by ordering a banana split before heading back to Washington, DC. |
