As currently scheduled (but subject to change until officially announced), the gala will be on May 6 and the induction ceremony will be May 7, 2011. |

Those are indeed the dates. We had originally scheduled SPACEFEST on those dates (Mother's Day weekend) but in consultation with Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF), we put it off a month to avoid conflicts. May 5 is also the 50th anniversary of Alan Shepard's flight, and I think ASF will announce plans for that too. |

You're right, those are indeed the dates that we're planning on so far. We'll be announcing more information in the new year! |

collectSPACE: Shuttle commander and record spacewalker chosen for Astronaut Hall of Fame A space shuttle commander who flew two orbiters' maiden flights and a spacewalker who set a duration record working outside the International Space Station (ISS) will be inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in Florida this May. Col. Karol "Bo" Bobko (ret.) and Maj. Gen. Susan Helms were confirmed as inductees by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that oversees the Hall of Fame's annual selections. The two veteran space shuttle fliers will be added to the 77 astronauts enshrined in the Hall since 1990, including all of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo program pioneers. |

I am not going to go this year. The two inducted are worthy but I think a few others should have been elected. I might change my mind as events unfold but if the events are the same as before, it would be a tough sell.Congrats to the new inductees. |

Forgive me if my question reveals my ignorance, but why only two inductees? How does the process work? |

The selection process is designed to pick between two and four inductees each year. The number of honorees depends on the results of the vote. |

I'm very pleased to hear that Karol Bobko and Susan Helms had been named as inductees into Astronaut Hall of Fame. I'm glad that Karol had been chosen for this, because other astronauts from the later groups had been chosen. It's been a long time waiting for Karol to be chosen. He truly deserved this honour and also Susan too.My congratulations to Karol and Susan having been chosen... |

Well, I hope they have a good turn out for the Astrounaut Hall of Fame induction this year. I know they are only inducting two astronauts into the Hall of Fame, but they are a great addition to the Hall! I really enjoy the Induction weekends. Things seem pretty laid back. The astronauts are in a great mood and I find them very approachable. There is a great ASF auction item up right now that goes along with the AHOF induction. The winner gets the grand treatment for the weekend! A night at the hotel where everyone is staying, VIP tickets to all the events, you get to ride with the astronaut to and from the induction events and then have dinner with them at the private astronaut dinner on Saturday night. First class all the way! This is a great item to bid on!!! Hope to see a lot of collectSPACE folks at the Induction!!! |

If anybody's going and can help me out getting some signatures, I'll make it worth your while. I'll be in the area that week, but won't be able to make it either the 6th or the 7th. Email me privately, thanks. |

For some events, like the Lunch with the Astronauts, it states:"Autograph requests will not be honored during the lunch." |

The way things are going, the STS-134 launch will now happen around the time of the Astronaut Hall of Fame induction. For folks coming into town for the launch, you might want to give the ASF folks a call and get a few tickets for the Gala and AHOF Induction. It will be a great way to spend some time while waiting for the launch! Meet some of your heroes and let your money go to a great cause!! Check out the ASF website for ticket info. Hope to see everyone there!! |

Any photos taken of or with Al Worden, Scott Carpenter and Charlie Duke during the AHOF inductions would be greatly appreciated. Send them [preferably no larger than 800 x 600 format] for posting on their websites. |

Regarding the Astronaut Hall of Fame this weekend: Is Susan Helms the fourth woman astronaut to be inducted into Hall of Fame? |

That's correct, Marcy. Preceding Helms was Sally Ride, Kathy Sullivan and Kathy Thornton. |

Collins will need to wait at least another year before she is eligible. The 2011 class had to have made their first flight in 1993 or earlier. Next year's class will be 1994 or earlier. Collins' first flight, STS-63, was in February 1995. |

The event was great!!!! I had the good fortune to be there. Did anyone else make it?In the acceptance speech he (astronaut Karol Bobko) discussed how is was being the backup on the Apollo-Soyuz and mentioned that another astronaut said "I always knew I would be over Moscow one day, but I thought it would be at 200 feet and full afterburners." Did anyone recall which astronaut was talking about? |

We made it to the gala dinner. Absolutely mental. Found the Induction Ceremony more interesting with only two astronauts. Cannot recall who Karol Bobko was referring to, sorry. You might like to try this website. |
