You may even still be able to obtain tickets for the Jim Lovell evening?

Pontefract, West Yorkshire, U.K. is again scheduled to play host to Ed Mitchell (April 2010) and Gene Cernan later in the year.

More great news - I'll certainly have to try to get over for either the Mitchell/Cernan event!

What's the odds of either of them attending Autographica next month?

Yes, plenty of tickets for the evening lecture still available.

The Thursday evening dinner with Capt Lovell has sold out now though.

I can confirm that Ed Mitchell is to visit Yorkshire on the 9th of April 2010.

Tickets will be on sale at the Lovell Lecture priced at £30 each. Priority will be given to people who attend the Capt Lovell talk.

Any more info then contact myself or Ken.

I myself am not able to make the Jim Lovell event in October, so I was hoping some kind-hearted collectSPACE member who is attending could do me a massive favour...

As it is one free autographed book per person, could one of you guys who either already has a signed copy of 'Apollo 13', doesn't want to bother getting one or just is a very nice person please please please pick me up a signed copy at the event?

This favour would be greatly appreciated - if you can find it in your heart to do so, then please contact me via e-mail!

I will of course cover shipping to Ireland when it comes to it...

I'm still looking for my knight in shining armour!

Even if one of you guys is bringing along a family member or friend who doesn't want a signed copy, could you get them to get one for me? Please, if you can do it then contact me at bubbly-warp@hotmail.com.

PS: I'll see some of you guys at Autographica so you can see in person how trustworthy I am!

A suggestion you may or may not wish to take up if you don't get an answer - a few years ago I sent my copy of Lost Moon through the post to Captain Lovell at the Lovells of Lake Forest Inn including of course return postage. He was happy to sign it for me. It cost about $70 (Australian) all up but was worth it. He was very happy to sign it for me, and personalised it.

I have emailed Ken regarding this and am awaiting a reply. I will ring him tomorrow to see what the situation is and to clarify what he will and wont do regarding his signing.

I will let you know what Ken says.

Were hoping to sell a lot more tickets too, so if anyone out there hasn't bought one yet, get in touch with Ken.

Thanks! Just one more question - will there be copies of his book supplied on the night, or must people attending supply them?

I would say that you will have to supply your own book, and as far as signing is concerned.

Ken tells me in relation to Lovell that: "I would think he would personalise them but can check when I get chance."

So that's the best I can do for you at the moment.

Anyone know if there are still tickets available for this event? Can Ken be contacted by phone? There used to be info on the WYAS website but can't see it anymore?

Yep, plenty of tickets left. Email Ken at: ken.willoughby@btinternet.com, put Lovell Tickets in the subject line and tell him you heard about it on collectSPACE.

All being well I'll be there for the meal on Thursday evening.

I know Ken has some tickets left so if anybody planning on going has friends who may want to meet this legend on what may be his last visit to the UK give Ken Willoughby a call and book yourself another ticket or two.

It is with regret that due to a lack of interest that I have to announce that the Jim Lovell event has been cancelled.

No plans thus far as to whether it will be re arranged in the future.

People who have purchased tickets for the Lovell event can either transfer them to the Ed Mitchell visit due in April (Interest permitting!) (Tickets are £30 for Ed's visit) and you will then get a refund on the outstanding monies or you can get a full refund if you choose not to attend in April.

Please contact Ken for refunds/transfers. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I'm really sorry to hear that, especially for those that had already bought tickets.

As recently as this morning I was sat on the computer at home trying to cost out how much it would be for me to attend, because I really would have liked to, but it just worked out too much in the end.

I am surprised to see the Lovell event cancelled... given the amount of interest that the previous presentations seem to have enjoyed!

I was costing up to see if I could afford to go, the tickets were slightly more expensive this time I think. Cost wouldn't have been a consideration some time ago!

Perhaps a sign of the economic downturn, and something to do with just signing the book only...

All others astronauts have been most gracious in their presentation, and autographs afterwards... especailly Fred Haise.

Thanks anyway...

The tickets were more expensive this time round (They were lowered recently to £40 from £60) but the price of them reflected the increased fee for Jim Lovell to attend.

It is always a hard thing to do and when you a reliant on ticket sales to pay fee's it is always going to be difficult as this has proved.

I am sorry for the people who have booked hotels and time off from work, travel etc and hope that you can get refunds or sort out your days, but please do support the events in the future, without supporting Ken's event in you attending, they simply wont go ahead no matter who organises them.

Believe me, it isn't as simple or easy as some people may think it is.

Ken does a great job, like what was said these thing happen. I'd got the Saturday booked so I'd wouldn't have to rush back from Yorkshire.

What a crap week this is turning out, I must have trodden on a ladybird at work and it's ONLY Wednesday. Wakefeild getting knocked out the play offs (rugby league), West Ham losing in the Carling Cup, now this. Never mind.

I think where the ticket pricing has had a real effect here is not so much the individual space enthusiasts but on family groups.

It has been notable at past presentations that there have been many whole families attending, including local people, curious onlookers, staff and students from the school.

Bringing a family of four or five to events such as Fred Haise, Charlie Duke etc was certainly a deep dig in the pockets but obviously many people were prepared to do it.

On this occasion I think the price effectively ruled out many of these groups attending. Plus I think what we would see as reasonable to pay is beyond that what the casual attendee/curious onlooker would be prepared to pay.

This having happened it's even more important that people get along and support these events in future.

Cheer up Ian. I got you the Stirling Moss poster print signed last weekend. He thought it was a really nice print. I got a photo of him signing it too!! Do you want me to post it as we won't be going to Pontefract.

Repeat what Andy has posted - we need to support Ken Willoughby and any other events that get organised 100%

That's terrible news. Just after I had to get a refund on the Gene Cernan talk, which was cancelled in March! I bought tickets for myself, wife and son. For both events. Took me three months to find a decent copy of "Lost Moon" for Jim to sign. We are REALLY DISAPPOINTED!!

Just read that the Jim Lovell night has been cancelled, im absolutely GUTTED!!! I was so looking forward to this night since I bought my tickets way back in February... I would have thought that out of ALL astronauts, Jim Lovell, and the Apollo 13 story would have been the one that everyone would have been wanting to hear....Just can't believe it was cancelled due to lack of interest!!

I just hope another evening with the icon Jim Lovell can be arranged soon, and this huge disappointment is just a distant memory.

Ken rang me (re: tickets refund ) on Saturday, I tell you I feel for this guy, he told me they were looking at around 500 turning up only 270 (in my opinion, is still a lot) tickets sold.

At Ponty last year they must have been 250 /300 people... Sad news indeed.

Anyone want to buy a soft back A13 book (unsigned)?

While I was not able to get over for the Jim Lovell event if it had gone ahead, I am certainly planning to make the trip over for both the Mitchell and Cernan events next year, so please keep up the excellent work, Ken!

In fairness to Ken, he had no option but to cancel the Cernan event planned for earlier in the year.

Cernan contacted Ken shortly before the event to say that something had come up at short notice. He could still make it over but his stay would be shorter than planned and he would have to drop the lectures planned for the school hosting the event.

To have proceeded on those terms would have been cynical and tactless and under those circumstances Ken had no option but to postpone; it is hoped however that Cernan will be over again in the Fall of 2010.

As Andy indicated earlier in this post... organising such events is no easy matter and I have the utmost respect for Ken and the effort he puts in to organising these shows.

It will all work out in the end.

Apollo astronauts can get called away at any time to do a myriad of different things. It is like a juggler trying to keep lots of things in the air at the same time, inevitably some time or other one will get dropped.

It was a case of lack of support this time round really, I tried to get some corporate sponsorship to help Ken out but no one was willing to part with any cash up north at this present time to support the event.

This, allied to higher ticket prices for Lovell, but that is a reflection of the astronaut's fee. Some charge more than others.

We are lucky in the UK that we have people like Ken and I amongst others willing to put their own time, money and effort into organising events like this. Okay, it doesn't always work out as this event has shown but at least we try and strive to make them happen. Ken has had success after success, so one event not going ahead due to lack of support/cost isn't a reflection of effort on his part.

There are several astronauts I'd like to get over here, but it's all about having money in place first before committing to any event, that's one of the harder parts of it.
