Look out for the last programme in the "Stranger than fiction" series on UK TV Channel 5 next Wednesday,8th November at 8pm.It is called "The inside story of Apollo 13" and the programme listing boasts previously un-released NASA footage, testimonies from ground control staff, including James Lovell and Fred Haise...and it is not a repeat. |

Well done channel 5 - I really enjoyed the programme. It was very well made wasn't it - the tension was all there and it really reminded you of the amazing achievement that was made to bring the crew back alive with what was in effect an impossible situation on the face of it. |

I was pleasantly surprised by this decent documentary. I don't usually expect much from Channel 5, but this was a worthy re-telling of the Apollo 13 story without being obviously "over the top." It was an amazing story in real life [I remember it like it was yesterday!] and doesn't need to be sensationalised. The contributions by Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, Gene Kranz, Glynn Lunney, Sy Liebergot and Charlie Duke added a great deal of authenticity. It's a pity they didn't mention why Jack Swigert couldn't contribute to the programme, but that's a small gripe. I give it 7/10. |

Anyone spot that some of the onboard footage of Lovell was actually from Apollo 8? Apart from that it was a good documentary.Paul |

Paul,They also managed to include footage of a "J" mission SIM bay, (Apollo 15 I think) along with the classic stills, at the point in the documentary when the SM seperated..... On the whole though I thought the show very good with far fewer misiniformed an inaccurate sequences than is the norm for this kind of programme. Regards, Rick |

Nothing much new, but it is always nice to see interviews with Sy Liebergot, Glynn Lunney and Gene Kranz. The only thing that I felt was seriously misleading was that they only mentioned the shift handover after the whole section about powering down the CM and moving into the LM. It definitely gave the impression (choice of footage and all) that Gene Kranz's team was still on duty during this part of the crisis. There was some video footage that I definitely hadn't seen before. Did anyone else spot Bill Tindall? |

How about the few snippets of TV coverage that were shown? The quality was superb, because it hadn't been transferred from its original video format. There were just a couple of bits of Walter Cronkite, and a small piece of BBC coverage with James Burke.I wonder if Mark Gray can tell us what exactly has been the response of the TV networks when approached for their video footage? That piece of Apollo 9 with Cronkite's commentary was one of my favourite pieces of all Mark's discs. Mark, do you think the networks will ever allow you access to this material? Colin.

I'd seen the James Burke footage before actually, from "Apollo 13: To the Edge and Back."But I agree, very nice to have it included, along with some of the contemporary press conferences.

Yes, I'd seen it before as well. But the existence of this (and some other colour video footage I have from the BBC Apollo 13 coverage) seems to confirm that more of this footage exists. There were a couple of pieces of James Burke/Patrick Moore/ Geoffrey Pardoe/ Tony Nicholson featured in a programme a year or so back. I, of course, recorded it - I think it was called "The Week We Watched". These bits were recorded a short while before the main LM burn on the way home about 24 hours after the emergency began.I fear we may lose a lot of this material if the networks continue to refuse the public access to it. Colin.

Would it be against the copyright to post a clip of the TV news coverage here? |
