Thanks Paul,I managed to locate other copies in the "usual" places too thanks to the ISBN I found on B&N, and just picked up one. But actually I'm now wondering as it seems to be a biography of Tereshkova rather than an autobiography.. I hope it is something like Titov's "I am Eagle", written by M. Caidin but based on lengthy interviews with Titov. Frederic IP: Logged |

The "Seagull" book is a standard biography, written by Mitchell Sharpe, who also wrote a similar book about Gagarin. It is suitable for adults or teens, and covers her early life and the flight. Being an older book, it is rather dated, considering how much we have learned about the Soviet program since. Still, worth a read.If Colin Burgess is reading this thread, he has an entertaining story about the first time Tereshkova saw this book. I believe "Bonjour Cosmos" was only ever published in French (and probably Russian) - if anyone knows otherwise, I'd love to know. Lothian's "Valentina" book is a huge tome, concentrating mostly on Tereshkova's work over the decades as an international woman ambassador. The chapter on the spaceflight is in interview form, as is much of the book, and is one of the best resources to hear Tereshkova's version of her experiences. I believe she did some UK appearances in connection with the book when it first came out. FF IP: Logged |

Ah Francis, you have a long memory ... in 1993 I attended the Association of Space Explorers' congress in Vienna, and in addition to meeting a whole galaxy of astronauts and cosmonauts I enjoyed a whole week of socialising with people whose feats I had admired since my early teens back in the 60s. I'd managed to meet and chat with Valentina, but the next day I had a copy of "It Is I, Seagull" with me, and I asked her if she would sign it for me. She looked at the dustjacket and began studying the book's illustrations with a puzzled look on her face, particularly the one of her with Neil Armstrong and another with Andrian and Yelena. Valentina does speak English, so I asked her if she was familiar with the book. "No," she said, "I have never seen this book before." She looked at the publisher's page, and said "Mitchell Sharpe? I do not know Mitchell Sharpe." After she'd looked through it a little more I asked if she would like to borrow it for a while and she shrugged, then signed it before handing it back, saying "No, but I do not know this book."And there the mysery hangs; so if anyone's getting her to sign a copy at Autographica, why not ask the same question and see what sort of response you get? Hi Rick and other, I have a nice black and white photo of Valentina Tereshkova in helmet, that I can print in 10x10 inches. I can email a preview. I'm also looking for someone who kindly get an autograph of Valentina for me. Please, email me. Thanks! http://www.farthestshots.com IP: Logged | |
