Thanks for the heads-up Rob. Not so much for the autograph collector in there but some nice flown pieces.There's one or two wild estimates in there - although it'd be nice to think my Ed Mitchell signed photo of him by the flag is now worth $300-400, I somehow doubt it!

My feelings exactly. Not much for the autograph collector but if I'm not mistaken, their last auction didn't have much either. Also, their estimates seem quite a bit high for the few lots that they are offering in autographs. Would love to own the STS 107 signed crew litho though. Sadly, it is $12,000.00 over my budget. Does anyone know how it works with the opening bids on lots? Does the estimates have anything to do with the opening bids? I'm willing to take a shot on a couple of the items but much less than the estimates. Dave |

I can't believe the estimates for the Apollo posters. I have seen the same posters sel for $10-$20 on ebay and they are estimating 150-200. Also, it is hard to believe that an STS-107 crew signed litho would be estimated at 12000-15000 when you can get an STS-51L Signed photo for half of that. The STS-107 litho are fairly common compaired to the STS-51L photos. Charles |

Lot 1223 in the previous Aurora Galleries auction was an STS-107 crew signed lithograph that registered a hammer price of $12,000.Note that Swann Galleries' STS-107 crew signed lithograph is accompanied by a "Typed Letter Signed by Douglas Brown stating that this lithograph is from his brother's estate." It was previously announced that the sale of Brown's memorabilia would go to benefit a charity of his family's choice. (And yes Michael, I do hope to attend the auction.) |

Thanks Rob for the heads up. According to the price estimates posted....I must be a millionaire. I sure do not feel like one !! The Same Apollo 11 poster I bought at an antiques shop for 25.00 is for sale for 700.00-1000.00.....JEEZ !!! MY crew signed Apollo 11 signed beta cloth patch and my crew signed flown and unflown Apollo 13 beta patches are valued far beyond what I would have thought !! Somehow I will remain humble but it is getting tough !! LOL....Donald Brady |

You guys don't worry Swann is just the beginning in wrong estimates. Superior and Aurora will follow!!!!! Since years they want to make us believe what the space collectables are really worth. The bigger auction houses must very much hate ebay (which never names estimates!!!) and forums like CollectSpace which make us collectors smart. I would put Astro Auction in the same category like Swann, Superior and Aurora as you won't get a bargain here.
Ebay forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why? Because you can get deals here! Why? Because some seller have no idea what they sell and present it wrong! That's our gain! It's that easy.
Once I got on ebay auction site an Apollo 11 flown metal medallion for $1.50 and I guarantee you guys that you will get an estimate over $100 - $200 from the mentioned auction houses. My advise don't participate in any other auction than ebay. You won't regret it. Anna W.

High reserves? Don't forget these are the people who sold an Apollo 11 signed pic for $34,000. I have a sneaking suspicion they know who their target market is. And it's not us... Cheers,

Yes, these high profile companies have a worlwide clientele.
The Marilyn Monroe auction at Christies in 1999 was extraordinary as were the JFK and Jackie auctions.
They certainly have made our hobby a higher profile one. This makes our collections worth more, but very expensive to buy more. It reassures me that these are great investments too.
It also allows unusual material like lunar surface flown maps available. You will rarely find that kind of personally owned astronaut flown material on ebay. All I can say is wow!

There are definitely some interesting items. However, it again makes me wonder how many items are out there waiting to be sold. For instance, when Frohman was giving me a sales pitch on Duke's flown maps, he assured me that these were the only ones available from the Apollo missions. Now we see that probably all the Apollo astronauts kept their maps to sell in the future. I still would like to have one, but it makes me worry about the relative scarcity and therefore future value.I will still probably bid on a few items. However, at this rate, I don't think I will be surprsed if a flown kitchen sink pops up on a future auction. |

I think it is a safe bet to buy the Apollo 11 items- but they are quite expensive!

Yeah, some stuff is expensive and some stuff makes me think that some items I have are worth a lot more than what I thought. Going back to the STS-107 piece, I think it's more 'valuable' because STS-51L didn't really make it into space and STS-107 did. Columbia also had four rookies while Challenger had three. I'm surprised at the low [rices of the Apollo 11 signed pics. My favorite item (the one that made me go whoa, that's tight) was the Apollo 11 toothbrush. I wonder if it has plaque or germs from Buzz...-Rodrigo |

I would think that STS-51L would be more valuable. Yes, it didn't make it into space, but this mission is incredibly well known, with some of the members now actually icons in popular culture. |

I think that the STS-51L is more valuable since only a small number were signed by the crews. I have heard that only around 25 exists. On the other hand there are hundreds of STS-107 crew signed lithos out there.Charles |

Like Robert stated in his post, the STS 107 in Aurora's auction went for over $12,000.00 while the 51L went in the $4500.00 range. For exact numbers just check it out in the past auction catagory. Dave |

Just because somebody was fool enough to pay $12,000 for something does not mean that it is worth that much.I remember someone paying over $100,000 for the "Legends of the West" misprinted stamps back in the early 90's and a few months later the USPS had a lottery for the remaining copies and sold them at face value. Robert, the page on the Swann auction says: "Aldrin is ...selling ... a Lunar Module (LM) Activation Checklist card used by Aldrin and Armstrong prior to undocking from the Command Module, with notes made by Armstrong during his preparations" Looking at the Swann site it looks as though the card is page 62/63 but the description says Armstrong made notes on page 64. Is this a mistake? I don't know what they think is the significance of Armstrong's note on a page not being offered for sale. |

I believe the reference to page 64 may be a typo as the inscription described as written by Armstrong can be clearly seen in the photograph of page 63 of the checklist in the printed catalog (lot 144). |

Gerry, I'll go you one better. I have a dollar bill that was signed "in" person by the big three, Shepard, Glenn and Armstrong! The Glenn was signed with the great J.H.Glenn Jr. signature in 1965, and the Armstong was signed in Sept. 1969.Like Don I'm a near the phone!!!! |

I don't know much about how these auction things work. ;-) Is there a particular person at Swann I could call to ask about possibly auctioning a couple of my items? I would hate to part with them but I might need some financial help.  Perhaps there's someone out there willing to pay big bucks for my NASA press kit cover that's signed by 10 of the Moon walkers, and 5 of the Original 7. |
