At this morning's Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Hearing, NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe revealed the project title for the agency's efforts to develop new spacecraft:"NASA will initiate Project Constellation to develop a new Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) to provide crew transport for exploration missions beyond low Earth orbit. NASA plans to develop the CEV in a step-by-step approach, with an initial unpiloted test flight as early as 2008, followed by tests of progressively more capable designs that provide an operational human-rated capability no later than 2014." I have to admit, when I first heard there was going to be a new NASA directive, I was apprehensive. I am so relieved and pleased to see that NASA has a clear direction towards manned exploration of the solar system. The new plan is well thought out, even very creative in its budget applications. It finally takes some ambiguity out of the shuttle programs and shows firm leadership with a vision. Congradulations, NASA!Thanks, Robert, for your posts and tireless efforts for CollectSpace. I appreciate it as do so many on this forum. Regards, Zeppelin |

The main contractor contenders all released tentative artist concepts of what CEV and lunar outposts may look lke back in 2004 .At best, though, these were really good guesses at what it may be like. Best wait for a few more weeks when the initial concepts are submitted from the contractors for Spiral 1 to NASA. Its from these that two contractors will be chosen to develop two CEV vehicle concepts in an earth orbit fly off. |

The next milestone will be on Monday, when contractor CEV proposals are due to NASA.After that, it's anyone's guess, with Griffin saying he wants to speed up development of the spacecraft. ------------------ http://allthese worlds.hatbag.net/space.php "America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow." - Commander Eugene Cernan, Apollo 17 Mission, 11 December 1972 |

It's great that NASA has a clear direction. Goals are imperative to success. I'm curious about the latest group of astronaut candidates who were so nice in attending the NASA Open House. Will they every fly on the shuttle, or are they preparing to fly Project Constellation space craft? |

When they were selected, the newest candidates were told that they would not fly on the Shuttle, and I don't think that's changed.------------------ http://allthese worlds.hatbag.net/space.php "America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow." - Commander Eugene Cernan, Apollo 17 Mission, 11 December 1972 |
