We've been blogged! For those not familiar, a blog -- short for "web log" -- is a cross between a "what's new" page and a journal. We'll be using this format (see our homepage) to deliver the same great news stories you've come to expect from cS, as well as shorter "breaking news" updates. What do you think of our new look?

I hope it's just a hoax-

I liked the un-blogged version.

...but, I can get used to it.

Aloha

Robert -- I liked the eye-candy of the pictures better...seemed more like a magazine than a bulletin board list of news/info. But like others, I can get used to it. And if I need "eye candy" I can go to the sightings pages, right? End of the day, this is one of the best darn websites out there, and I often come back several times a day. (Instead of "got space?" maybe it should be "addicted to space?") Other than the excellent content, it is really the sense of community that keeps me coming back and waiting for the little red dots to light up to read what someone has to say on the message boards that really draws me. (Please...please...don't ever get rid of the little red buttons!!!! -- now I am sounding like the ginger bread man in Shrek. Time to sign off for the night!)

Really -- I prefer the front end graphics. Was nice to see and in a quick glance I knew immediately that something had changed. (Same principle, I guess, with the red buttons). With the bogged lines, I guess I get bogged with going through the details and spending time figuring out -- did I read that already? Well, ok...so I'm lazy, but I liked it before.

Won't keep me away, though! Hope my comments are taken in the spirit they are meant.

Regards,

Rich

I appreciate the comments thus far -- and you (the collective "you") make good points. I suppose I should share my own reasoning behind the change -- it wasn't just to adopt the latest trend.

First, I was bothered that the homepage was becoming little more than an abbreviated version of the News page. It had come to the point where I was simply cutting and pasting between the two pages and then uploading both.

More importantly though, there were times where I didn't have enough information for a full story but wanted to post something. I could always add it here -- on the message boards -- but then it didn't get the same type of attention that homepage stories received.

Take for example the Canadian astronaut stamps due in October 2003 ("Lick a Canadian astronaut"). There is literally nothing more to that news than the announcement itself -- so not enough for an article. But I wanted a way to feature it as I think its cool, and I think you (the readership) would think the same.

The new format also allows me to link to more than just the news story. I can point to related resources from around the site -- which I hope will be useful to new readers. If they missed it the first time, they can find it now.

Does this make sense?

Robert -

One thing I think might fun - and I think would work cool with the blog format - is for folks to be able to send you a .jpeg of a cool (and hopefully unique) piece from their collection and just put up a little blurb about it.

You could stick a link to the .jpeg, keep it up for a couple of weeks, and then take it down. A few of us will never get around to doing our own web pages but might get a kick out of seeing other people's prize stuff.

e.g., "Joe Smith shares this image of his Neil Armstrong WSS portrait. This is one of only three known Armostrong WSS's inscribed to Mr Gorsky"

...or whatever... Just as a way to get a better sense of what cool stuff people have out there.

Assume, of course, that folks would have to format the image to your specifications - but it might be fun.

Thats a great idea Rodina.

Robert - you have a "CLASS" site.

Between the collectors and news and information that you make available, you already have a venue that is unsurpassed.

You could post an image, and write 2 words about it and I would love it!!!

collectSPACE can only get better.

Thanks again for a great forum.

Aloha,

Frank

Don't like it... I prefer the "un-blogged" verison better... It's just seems more friendly and inviting.

Just my opinion... -CF

Not be paranoid, Robert, but I think you ought to be clearer that a .jpeg sent in to CollectSpace grants CollectSpace a NON-EXCLUSIVE LICENSE to republish it in whatever media you see fit, in perpetuity.

You don't mean, I am sure, to obtain the rights (however limited they may be) I hold in my own stuff to show it in some media of my own.

Though I don't think I stated that it was exclusive, I can understand the apprehension and have edited the text accordingly.

Robert -

You didn't say it was exclusive and
you didn't even do much to imply it. Moreover, I don't think you'd try to enforce anything of the sort - but I get paid to be paranoid - and clarity is always better.

Thanks!

I like the look and feel of the old version better. But the idea of having little snippets of info on the home page is a great idea as is the Rodina idea of having collecters share there unique items. Either way it is still the best site on the internet.
