Morris Beck provided his famous service for collectors of adding his "Beck printed recovery cachet" to covers for a very small fee, batched them up and sent them to the ship or cover coordinator for distribution to the ship. After postmarking on the ship they were directly mailed back to the collector - hence the various city postmarks on top of the naval ship cancel.

How were the UNADDRESSED covers processed? There are a multitude of unaddressed ones and ones with Beck's own address (typically in pencil) produced for each ship.

How did the unaddressed ones get back to the collector who submitted them or were all these unaddressed covers that Beck submitted himself and were mailed separately back to him or what? Any thoughts appreciated...

One possibility is that they were not unaddressed, but had a peelable addressed sticker which has since been removed.

There are many (non-Beck) collectible unaddressed covers that have sticker address label marks on them where the labels have been removed much later. Sticky labels removed immediately after receipt would not necessarily have any revealing stains that give away their former presence.

Tom, both my dad and I have used peel-able labels for the majority of our collecting time. Good labels will leave no residue at all and leave a nice clean unaddressed cover.

Whilst not attempting to muddy the waters there are further possibilities.
  1. They had pencil addresses which have been erased.

  2. Some of the batched envelopes were in a self addressed box which were returned to Beck from the ship. These he sold on to dealers.

  3. Similarly to above, he batched up some that were returned to himself, which he then sent out separately under an outer cover to a list of his regular pre-order clients.
All four methods, peelable label, pencilled client address, bulk sales to dealers, and bulk return followed by separate mailing under cover to subscribers are not mutually exclusive and any combination or permutation may have occurred, thus resulting in today's 'unaddressed' envelopes.

All times are CT (US)
