While compiling a one-frame exhibit as a start for a collection on Japanese spaceflight, I came across a peculiar problem.Although I have been following Japanese space travel since the late 1970s and thus own quite a few older covers from the early 1960s, one appears to be missing: Lambda-4S 4 launch of 22-09-1967 (or 42.9.22). I own the Rank covers of Lambda-4S 1-2-3 and 5, with pictorial postmark of Uchinoura and/or the national stamp Yotsura (near Tokyo, where ISAS was located). I asked a friend who also collects js since many years, but he too found no Lambda-S4 - flight 4 in his collection. My question: does a cover of this exist or were no covers made of this launch? |

I must admit I am slightly confused. By Lambda-4S-4 do you mean the Ohsumi-4 attempted satellite launch?Because if you do then you are out by two years. The launch took place on 22-September-1969 or Showa-44/9/22. And yes there are launch covers for that flight (although not necessarily Rank, and maybe not good enough for a strict astrophilately exhibit. Here is mine: Otherwise I can find no mention of a launch from Uchinoura on the date you quote. |

Indeed, my fault. The Lambda-4S-4 or Oshumi-4 attempt was on 22-09-1969 or 44.9.22. I know the NORAD cover (don't have it) as the only one remembering this launch. Other covers of this launch ? |
