While old enough to have been aware of the Mercury-Redstone, Mercury-Atlas and Gemini flights, it wasn't until the Apollo 8 flight and my favorite time of year, Christmas, that I really started to collect items about the space program. I thought I would show some of my favorite covers from December of 1968.

Great covers, Tom! And I too am old enough to remember that magical month.

There were actually some Christmas cards from the USS Yorktown enclosed in some covers postmarked for the recovery! Ray Cartier gave me one early in my space cover collecting career, and this dufey newbie ended up trading it away for I-don't-know-what. Sigh...

Merry Christmas!

Very nice cover selection of the most crucial Apollo flight, in my opinion, as so much was riding on man's first lunar orbital flight in December 1968 for the first time in the history of the Apollo program.

You have an excellent ONC cover, Tom, along with one of my all-time favorite Centennial Covers when Apollo 8 orbited the moon on Christmas Eve. I love the cachet design and colors used in conjunction with the 1968 Christmas postage stamp issue.

Here is my Apollo 8 Christmas cover from Houston. It is signed by the Apollo 8 and 11 prime and back-up crews.

Two of my favorite Apollo 8 recovery covers. A Sarzin cover with AP photographer Barry Sweet’s photo of the Apollo 8 crew on it. This photo was used by many newspapers in the states and over seas.

Also the USS Yorktown prime recovery ship, The Fighting Lady Family-Gram newsletter for the Apollo 8 recovery, with a RS cachet applied by the navy. I have shown a copy of the letter before it was folded to be mailed off.

Here are a few of my Apollo 8 recovery signed covers. One is signed by the Helo Recovery Pilot Donald Jones and one signed by him and some of the crew members. One signed by members of the UDT-Frogmen recovery team and a nice USS Yorktown Prime Recovery Ship cover.

All times are CT (US)
