Space Cover of the Week, Week 628 (Nov 7, 2021) Space Cover #628: Venera 4 missionVenera 4 was the first Soviet probe successfully performing analysis of Venus. The mission launched on June 12, 1967 and reached Venus on October 18. The landing capsule disconnected from the station and entered the atmosphere transmitting the data until it was destroyed by the pressure at about 28km (17 miles) from the surface. Special postmark has been issued in Moscow and applied on 20.10.1967 stating – Soviet Probe on Venus. Another, more interesting (in my opinion), postmark has been issued in Kiev and applied on 19.10.1967. For some reason I find that Soviet Venera and Mars programs are much underrated by collectors that mostly prefer to focus on the early lunar probes. By the way, that was my first post after 3 years of blackout. |

Great topic and welcome back, Efim!Venus has been garnering a lot of attention of late since it appears to be the victim of global warming taken to the extreme. In fact, there are three new missions being prepared to do more Venus research: DAVINCI+, VERITAS, and EnVison. | |
