Space Cover of the Week, Week 464 (April 22, 2018) Space Cover #464: Pioneer 11 Saturn EncounterThis week's Space Cover of the Week commemorates the Pioneer 11 Saturn encounter nearly 40 years ago on Sept. 1, 1979. Pioneer 11 took the first closeups of Saturn, its mysterious rings and several of its 10 moons. Data obtained by this flyby was used in planning the encounter of Voyager in 1980-81. The above cover was autographed by Pioneer Project Scientist, Dr. John H. Wolfe and serviced by the Ames Research Center Stamp Club. ------------------ John Macco Space Unit #1457 |

As all interplanetary NASA unmanned missions, Pioneer 11 was also tracked from DSN network in USA, Spain and Australia.Below, a rubber stamp cachet cover postmarked in Robledo de Chavela (Madrid) and a sticker cover postmarked in Tharwa (Australia) both on Sep 1, 1979 commemorating this historic space event. |

Efim, concerning Spanish rubber stamp cachet, this one, and all the RSC covers from 70's and 80's were created by Jose Manuel Grandela, who was a NASA employee in Spanish tracking stations in Madrid (Fresnedillas and Robledo de Chavela). As astrocollector, he produced hundreds of different RSC covers from Apollo to STS. Many of them are still available in the philatelic market. The ilustration on cover is a reproduction of the below photo. This photo is a composition and reflects a comparative between the DSS-63 (the greatest antenna in MDSCC, 64 meters of diameter) and Palacio de Comunicaciones (Communication's Palace) located in Cibeles square, in the centre, centre of the Madrid. Palacio de Comunicaciones was for a long time Spanish post headquarters -Correos- and actually is the seat of the Madrid's hall town. |
