Space Cover of the Week, Week 427, July 23, 2017 Space Cover #427: Statue of Liberty FDCWhat does the Statue of Liberty first day cover (FDC) have to do with space? I will tell you. On April 12, 1985, the space shuttle Discovery on Mission 51D was launched on a satellite deployment mission. Aboard Discovery was a piece of copper salvaged during the Statue of Liberty restoration. After returning to earth, the copper was melted into the seals that you see on the cover. The cover was autographed by 51D commander, Karol "Bo" Bobko. The profits from the sale of these covers went toward the restoration of the statue. ------------------ John Macco Space Unit #1457 |

Has anyone a crew-signed cover, just out of curiosity? |

I have not seen a crew signed one and this is the first one I have seen signed by anyone on the crew. I have seen several of these and all were unsigned. |

It should be noted; both Col. Bobko and his pilot on STS-51J/Atlantis, Ron Grabe, are native New Yorkers and the crew patch for that mission incorporated the Statue of Liberty in the design. | |
