Space Cover of the Week, Week 412, April 9, 2017 Space Cover #412: GT-12 Proof Captain's CoverAbove is a Captain's cover for the Gemini 12 mission. You've all seen these — not a necessarily difficult cover to find but it does take some hunting and a little luck. But have you ever seen a proof of this cover? Ben Ramkissoon had one in his main exhibit. When I learned that he was going to sell off his holdings, I sent him an email asking if he would consider selling it to me. But I suppose that my email got to him too late. Two years ago at a stamp show, I ran across one, very possibly the same one at a dealer's booth. He priced it for a normal GT-12 Captain's cover and didn't notice that the names of the astronauts were typed in, not printed as in the above cover. Since it was a proof, it was created before the actual coordinates of the splashdown were known and so those are omitted. Finally, the actual date of the splashdown is a rubber stamp. I don't have any idea as to whether there were two or three or more of these, but it's possible that I ended up with Ben's GT-12 Proof Captain's Cover after all. |

Very interesting cover. This is the first one I have seen. I will take it for granted that the proof was to show the Captain and get his O.K. before they were printed? |

I don't know for sure that it was for the Capt. to approve but I think that would be a logical assumption. Of course he could have delegated the decision. To Tony, thanks for sharing the image of yours. I wonder how many others were created? | |
