Space Cover of the Week, Week 248 (January 12, 2014) Space Cover #248: Apollo 8 TWA CachetFor our recent tribute to Apollo 8’s 45th anniversary, let me cap it off with a contractor cover from Trans-World Airlines (TWA) for the launch of Apollo 8. This cover was machine postmarked at the Kennedy Space Center on the Apollo 8 launch date, December 21, 1968. The cachet features some detailed artwork of the crew, the Saturn 5 launch, and of an Apollo CSM and LM (unfortunately the LM part was not accurate for the Apollo 8 mission) in orbit around the moon. TWA was the "base operations" contractor for the Kennedy Space Center in this era and sent these covers to their employees as souvenirs with the letter shown below: Additionally, TWA produced another cacheted cover for their employees for the Apollo 11 flight. Has anyone seen TWA cacheted covers for any flights other than Apollo 8 and Apollo 11? |

Didn't think I had any of the TWA covers for the Apollo manned lunar missions but found this one for the Apollo 11 launch date while filing some other covers away. This really is one of the joys of not being better organized. You find a great cover you didn't remember having. Many thanks, Dennis, for showing the TWA Apollo 8 cover on SCOTW! |

Another favorite of my Apollo "on base" covers from Kennedy Space Center is from NASA itself; the center's Launch Vehicle Operations (LVO) directorate headed by German/US rocket pioneer Dr. Hans Gruene.Inside each #10 size printed cachet cover, depicting AS-506 on the pad, is a KSC-NASA stationery format letter addressed to each LVO team member thanking them for their Apollo 11 launch vehicle team effort that help put Americans on the moon. On top of that, each letter is even hand-signed by Dr. Gruene himself! What more can you ask for? Perhaps Bob McLeod can post one of the LVO covers here, which by the way, were also issued for Apollo 17 and Apollo-Soyuz. | |
