Space Cover of the Week, Week 189 (November 26, 2012) Space Cover #189: Soyuz 31 Intercosmos CosmonautOn August 26, 1978, the third Intercosmos cosmonaut was launched aboard Soyuz 31 to dock with the Salyut 6 space station. Along with commander Valery Bykovsky, Sigmund Jahn from East Germany was launched as part of the Intercosmos Program. The flight was the seventh to Salyut 6 and sixth to successfully dock. The flight duration was 7 days, 20 hours, 49 minutes and 4 seconds. Above is a cover autographed by the Soyuz 31 crew. |

Actually, Jähn became the first German to fly into space. He was a citizen of the German Democratic Republic. | |
