Well, thanks to Garry's resurrection of this thread, I've been inspired to update most of the image links in the Pierce census! However, the recovery disk that Picturetrail sent me before they went out of business missed three of the Pierce images - Steve Durst and Walter Hopferweiser, if you are reading this, please drop me a line so we can try to get replacement images. And anyone who would like a copy of the revised Pierce census, please email me. Glad to send one! |

Dennis, I sent you an email with scans of my three USS Pierce Carpenter covers. I'm considering parting one if I get a tempting offer. |

Thanks Walter and Ross (and Garry for sending even more images)! I'm clearing up a few questions on some of the images, then will have the updated census ready for distribution.Looks like the number will be 21 so far... |

I still have some questions regarding my USS Pierce Helicopter cover. The facts are: - The postmark is genuine.
- The writing is by the helicopter pilot John Wondergem.
- Most likely the cover was prepared before the recovery mission began. Otherwise it would state USS Pierce rather than USS Intrepid
- Cdr John M. "Wondy" Wondergem made his notations after picking up Scott Carpenter
- USS Pierce was too small to enable a helicopter to land on her deck
Did Wondergem's helicopter or another helicopter from the USS Intrepid bring any equipment for the recovery of the Mercury capsule to the USS Pierce this evening after the recovery of Carpenter? Might this cover be part of this delivery? Is there any other explanation for these facts? |

I bought this cover from a US eBay dealer. He isn't a space cover dealer, but a naval cover dealer. I sent him (and others) a list of ships and dates to see if he had any in stock which he hadn't listed on eBay — I didn't tell him (or the other dealers) a reason, but they were all either recovery ships, Polaris launches, tracking ships, or other space related naval vessels I had indexed as 'wants.' I sent my wants list to twelve dealers who had shown an interest, and got replies back from all of them in the negative, apart from one hit. This one.I duly bought it for $8.50 about six months ago. I had absolutely no idea it was a rarity. And, by the way, it is completely plain with no cachets or text on either obverse or reverse. Dennis, can you send me your USS Pierce audit spreadsheet if you still have it please? |

Congratulations Alan! Your cover will be #20 in the census! I'll update the census and send it out to you tonight. If anyone else wants a copy, please send me an email. And congratulations on getting it for $8.50! I don't think I've ever seen a MA-7 Pierce for under three figures. Much less under two figures! |
