Space Cover of the Week, Week 110 (May 22, 2011)Boy, What a Ride! While it has been said that only 44 actual philatelic covers were produced for the recovery of Freedom 7 by the USS Lake Champlain, a significantly larger number of covers were produced for the launch of Shepard on MR-3/Freedom 7. As Tom mentioned, George Goldey was the main producer of covers for the launch of MR-3 and shown here (2nd cover down) is a handsome Goldeycraft cacheted cover for the MR-3 launch (with less than perfect spelling). But Goldey was not the only creator of excellent cacheted covers for MR-3. The first cover (with Shepard's famous words: "Boy, what a ride!") and the 3rd cover, are popular SpaceCraft covers by Carl Swanson. The bottom cover marks the tenth anniversary of Freedom 7 and has an official NASA/KSC rubber stamp cachet applied by the KSC post office. Through the years, I was fortunate to have Alan Shepard autograph these four covers, with the anniversary cover signed back in 1974 and the others in 1987 and 1989. |

Thanks, Tim. Here's another and it's my last Shepard signed MR-3 launch cover and is a nice Goldeycraft red cacheted MR-3 launch cover. These MR-3 covers were expensive even back then and I paid $75 for the Swanson Spacecraft cover (3rd one down) from Ed and Eddie Bizub's E&E Space Covers. |

Boy, what great covers for "the Icy Commander," Alan Shepard! Here is a favorite of mine from Shepard, signed by him in 1987 on a Sarzin commemorative folder. Thanks for continuing the conversation about Alan Shepard commemorating the 50th anniversary of America's first astronaut space flight. Steve Durst, SU 4379 |
