I have obtained an unaddressed version of the Numeroff-designed cover flown on Pete Knight's Mach 6.7 flight on Oct. 3, 1967 (Ellington-Zwisler #102). Now, what is interesting is that on other, addressed versions, Numeroff hand written the following:
10 were carried - signed and authenticated by the pilot
1. Maj. Knight
2. Col. Walt Flint USAF (NASA)
3. Mrs. E. Goddard
4. Harry Gordon
5. Edmund Browne
6. W. J. Numeroff
7. Laura "
8. Douglas (J.N.) Richter
9. Troop 141 BSA (Edwards AFB)
10. Knight (family)
Now, I am aware of the existence of numbers 4 through 7 and they are all addressed to the recipient. Not sure how the unaddressed cover fits in. Ellington-Zwisler lists 13 flown, so maybe this is one of the extra three.

So, time to take a census. If I can account for more than 10, or even account for the 10 listed above, that data will help resolve my question.

So, if any of you own one of these covers (other than numbers 4 through 7), can you please e-mail and tell me if or to whom your cover is addressed? I will keep your name confidential, just want to get as accurate of an accounting as possible.

Dennis, as you probably know, I have cover no. 5.

Since all cards have addresses slightly hand-wirtten with pencil, the address of your cover might have been removed. Perhaps no. 10 did not have an address at all?

I wonder what was the result of your census?

Good point Walter! On closer inspection, there does appear to be some faint remnants of an erased address. But not enough to be legible...

And with respect to the census - It's been 11 years, a long time, but I do believe that yours is my first and only response!

In the meantime I saw another one at an auction. I let it pass, although it would have been a great item for trading.

Dennis and Walter, I have number 4, sent to Harry Gordon, as is addressed on the front of the oversized X-15 cover.

So were there around 5+ flown X-15 cover collectors around throughout the 1960's that were able to require such classics?

That would be Barb Baker, of course, Bill Nummeroff, and Henry Gordon that I knew personally from the 70's, but never heard of Edmund Browne, Doug Richter, and whomever "Laura" is/was.

Maybe they were non-cover collectors, but for some reason, were included on a list of folks to receive a flown X-15 flight cover from the pilot or sponsoring organization, such as a local boy scout troop from Edwards AFB.

All times are CT (US)
