from what I know, the Apollo-15 astronauts were given, I believe 3 different types of covers to sign before launch as an insurance policy in case they didn't make it back. Ken H. has better knowledge of insurance covers and hopefully will see this post and respond. ------------------ John Macco IP: Logged |

Noah, It's a fine item, which also comes with documentation from Mary Irwin, Jim Irwin's widow. This type are certainly considered Insurance covers, no question about it, but they are the second most popular and desired type for Apollo 15 and would be concidered Apollo 15 Type 2 Insurance covers. Thanks! I guess my confusion is that there is an identical one for sale on ebay that is not listed as an insurance cover but a signed crew cover... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2218623721 How is a person to know which is which? Noah IP: Logged |

Yes, the other one is identical to the one offered by Mrs. Irwin. It would be best to learn the origin of the other Apollo 15 Insurance cover, as it could have been signed after the flight, but, with the standard "Antarctic Treaty" stamp used & everything else consistent with authentic Apollo 15 (type 2) Insurance covers, it's very likely to be one also. I'll second what Bob said. Since the cover referred to directly came from the Irwin family, this is indeed a "2nd type" of crew insurance cachet cover. The "No. 1" or prime insurance cover from Apollo 15 depicts a different cachet design. In addition to the Ap-15 crew-patch emblem in full color, there is an added two symbols, printed in gold, beneath the mission logo.IP: Logged |

Hi Ken-The Type I Insurance Cover that you mentioned - I think it is the same as the one I know as a "Crew Cachet" (check the second to last cover in: http://www.picturetrail.com/gid823210 ). Is it? Thanks, Dennis IP: Logged |

Dennis--How are you? Your signed Ap-15 cachet cover is indeed one of the prime insurance covers from the crew. Note the propeller-wing and astronaut pin insignias, printed in gold, beneath the mission patch design. Also, the type of postage stamp affixed to the cover was especially selected by Col. Scott and you can tell from the crewmembers' signatures, overall, that the covers were signed pre-flight in this pattern. Offhand, I did notice your Irwin-signed cover that was illustrated beneath the crew-insurance entry on your website. Your story about acquiring Irwin's autograph brings back memories to me as well. That was in Chicago, 1986, during the big international stamp exhibition show, called AMERIPEX. Col. Irwin came at my invitation to enhance a public auction-sale of a flown cover that Irwin took to the Moon's surface and spoke at a Space Unit gathering. After the space meet, Irwin signed autographs freely--there was no charge in those days, ha--in which my father and I coordinated. Unfortunately, Dennis, the flown lunar cover--a Scott/Sieger variety--only realized less than $2,000 from the show's onsite and mail bid auction. Jim and I were hoping for at least $3,500+, ha, so you can see how times have certainly changed, huh? But that was nearly 20 years ago.IP: Logged |

Wow! Small world, isn't it? Sounds like almost all of the collectors that I have befriended since then were at the Chicago show. Hope things are going well for you in retirement from the space book biz, Dick! IP: Logged |
