The Johnson Space Center employee exchange store ShopNASA seems to be selling a mix of A-B Emblem and as well as an unknown source for different patches.I recently placed an order and received these: - ISS-67 - Not A-B Emblem - 3 3/4" wide
- ISS-68 - A-B Emblem - 4" wide
- ISS-70 (no names) - Not A-B Emblem, 4" wide
- ISS-71 - Not A-B Emblem, 3 1/4" wide
- Crew-8 - Not A-B Emblem, 3 3/4" wide
- Crew-10 - Not A-B Emblem - 3 1/4" wide
In some cases, with scrutiny, you can tell from their online photos that they may not be an A-B Emblem product but the sizes aren't listed so you aren't aware you're getting a smaller replica patch in come cases. Of note: the A-B Emblem patches come on A-B Emblem "Space Emblems" placards, the other ones are on a ShopNASA placard. This is a bit disappointing to be honest. |

For many, if not most missions*, as well as special events and anniversaries, the NASA exchange stores work with TCB Specialties, a promotional product manufacture, to take pre-orders for apparel and other embroidered accessories for employees to show their pride in working at space agency. I don't know if it is always the case, but through some of these offers, a 3 to 4-inch patch has been offered, which is essentially the apparel embroidery sold as a standalone emblem. When the pre-orders are fulfilled, sometimes ShopNASA orders extras or lists the leftovers for sale to the public. For the non-mission designs, like the Apollo 11 55th anniversary and the 2024 total solar eclipse, it has been the only way to get a patch as the same design was not produced by A-B Emblem. A-B Emblem remains the official patch provider for the astronaut office, and it it their patches, not the exchange stores', that astronauts wear on their flight suits. * I don't know when this began, but I remember the pre-orders offers dating as far back as STS-114 in 2005, though I believe the offer a patch is more recent. | |
