AB Emblem have just released a new older 2018 version of the Orion Crew Survival System patch. This OCSS "Engineering" patch is worn on the orange spaceflight training suits during the crew survival training, and also by the ground crews, engineers and technicians.

The previous 2019 4-inch round OCSS version of this patch that has a bull (Ox) in an orange space/pressure suit with the Orion command module orbiting around the Ox (it was a very rare patch). This patch has the following details on the label;

  • 298990 Made In USA 10/19 20 (on an old style white label without the crown emblem on)
  • 298990 Made In USA 12/22 20 (a new production run but has an old style label again)
  • 298990 Made In USA 01/23 20 (old style label)

This newer 3.4-inch round "Crew Survival Engineering" (as on the patch) patch has the following early 2018 SKU patch design number, 287082. The date codes used on this patch are now confirmed as;

  • 287082 A-B Emblem Made In USA 06/22 20 (on a new 'crown' emblem style label) AB E
  • 287082 A-B Emblem Made In China 06/22 01 (special order)
There could also be a 2018 date code used on the few patches from that year?

These OCSS patches are the official embroidered patches for internal NASA use to showcase the new flight suits used during the launch, flight and re-entry that the astronauts will be wearing for the Artemis missions to the Moon and back. Then onto Mars in the coming decade.

It has been bought to my attention by another cS member that some, or could possibly be most of these Orion Crew Survival System Engineering patches have "double embedded labels" on them.

As far as I can make out from the back image photo below, the SKU patch design number on the bottom label is different from the correct top label. The bottom label has ??9729. The date code 06/22 20 should be the same on both labels.

Both labels are sealed under the plastic coated backing.

Has anyone else found "double labels" on any of these "OCSS Engineering" patches? If so can you let me know so we can complete the full SKU number on the bottom label.

Many thanks to Paul Brennan for the back image photo above.

I went back in my archives and from a 2018 press event at Johnson Space Center, here is a photo of the patch attached to one of the suits in early development.

It might be down to the lighting, but the patch made in 2018 looks to have a lighter blue compared to the June 2022 version?

Speaking with a member of the development team today, the insignia with the "bull" is actually an ox, a homonym of "OCCS" — or Orion Crew Survival System.

The ox patch is still in use by the OCCS team, though it is not an official NASA emblem.

A limited number of patches of the original (2019) ox design are now available from AB Emblem, which made the earlier batch for NASA.

The Artemis II crew took part in a Day of Launch Demonstration Test on Wednesday (Sept. 20), during which they wore Orion Crew Survival System (OCCS) suits with the Crew Survival Engineering patch on their shoulders.

All times are CT (US)
