European Space Agency (ESA) release SpaceX Crew-4, Minerva mission patch, 2022ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti (IT) is scheduled to fly on a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station, on its fourth crewed operational flight called Crew-4, scheduled for launch in April 2022. She will fly with NASA astronauts Kjell Lindgren, Jessica Watkins and Robert Hines. The name of Samantha’s second mission to the International Space Station is 'Minerva'. Inspired by the Roman goddess of wisdom, the handicrafts and the arts, this name is a homage to the competence and sophisticated craftmanship of the men and women all over the world who make human spaceflight possible. The goddess Minerva also embodies the toughness and discipline that is required of us, and the wisdom we wish to demonstrate, as we consolidate and expand human presence in space. Minerva is often depicted with her sacred owl, a key feature of Samantha’s mission patch, designed by ESA graphic designer Karen Oldenburg. The eye of the owl is a yellow Moon, casting a white glow on a round Earth. Its beak hints at the shape of the International Space Station, with its characteristic solar panels. The two lines also symbolise Samantha’s two missions to space. Waves of ever darker blue make up the body of the owl and encourage us to rise to the challenge and move farther into deep space. The owl looks to the right, to the future of space exploration and adventure off Earth for our planet. |

The same photo shows Samantha Cristoforetti's collection of zipper pulls, including a new one for her Minerva mission. I recognize her "Don't Panic" pull from Expedition 42. Another appears to be for Expedition 67 (based on the colors). Anyone know what is the fourth? |

ESA Space Shop wanted $23 to ship two patches to Florida whereas Emblemen ships for free. Time will tell if I made the right choice or not. |

Are the ESA and Emblemen patches of the same manafacturer? Does ESA source its patches from Emblemen? That was my understanding, but I only see some of the patches offered on the ESA shop on the Emblemen website. |

My understanding is that Emblemen is a licensed retailer for ESA and related mission patches. The same with Quadrotem. I believe they both offer different patches from different ESA missions though, not sure if that is intended to be that way. If licensing agreements can be worked out for older ESA missions, I would love to see those too! |

Yes, Robert and Paul, you're both correct. Emblemen are the manufacturer for the Minerva patch, they are the same as the ESA Shop. Short ESA patch history, Quadrotem produced our patches for a long time, before they were commercially available. They were one of the first to take a license agreement with us to supply the public. At the same time, we wanted a supplier in the Netherlands for the patch of our Dutch colleague Andre Kuipers. We thought it might be possible to have a supplier in each country flying a national astronaut. We approached Stewarts in UK for Tim Peake's patch. Realising this would become harder to manage as the missions went on, we decided to keep to these original providers; Quadrotem has produced some older patches when we got permission from copyright holders, and Emblemen was able to produce near-perfect versions of the Principia patch when the lovely Stewarts team retired. We've enjoyed working with all these providers to get ESA patches out to the world. |
