Here is the payload patch for NASA's Vegetable Production System, more commonly known as Veggie, that has been in use aboard the International Space Station since 2013. The Vegetable Production System (Veggie) is a deployable plant growth unit capable of producing salad-type crops to provide the crew with a palatable, nutritious, and safe source of fresh food and a tool to support relaxation and recreation. The Veggie provides lighting and nutrient delivery, but utilizes the cabin environment for temperature control and as a source of carbon dioxide to promote growth. |

Here is the payload patch for the Passive Orbital Nutrient Delivery System (PONDS), an improved system for growing plants in space, developed for NASA by Tupperware Brands and Techshot Inc. PONDS is launching to the International Space Station on SpaceX's CRS-14 Dragon spacecraft. Iconic kitchen and housewares company Tupperware Brands, and Techshot Inc., a commercial space enterprise, partnered to further develop the concept and manufacture spaceflight-qualified PONDS plant growth units for use aboard the ISS. Up to six can be installed in Veggie at one time. Like the plant pillows, the PONDS devices are single-use items, which can be discarded after the plants are grown and harvested on orbit. However, unlike the plant pillows, PONDS can also be returned, refurbished, and reflown in space. |

NASA photo release A chile pepper is pictured suspended in weightlessness inside the International Space Station's "window to the world," the seven-windowed cupola. An insignia representing the Plant Habitat-04 investigation that successfully grew chile peppers in space for the first time is depicted next to the pepper. | |
