ISS Expedition 57 mission patch

The International Space Station's (ISS) Expedition 57 begins with the scheduled undocking of Soyuz MS-08. New crew members will arrive shortly thereafter on Soyuz MS-10.

ISS Expedition 57 will be led by commander Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency (ESA). His crewmates, all flight engineers, include: Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergei Prokopyev, Aleksei Ovchinin and Nikolai Tikhonov; and Jeanette Epps and Nick Hague of NASA.

And here's the shirt embroidery image for those interested. The unicorn is just barely visible.

Does this mean that Nikolai Tikhonov will fly on Soyuz MS-10?

There will be a meeting held in Roscosmos next week to prepare Roscosmos's decision on the crews in 2018 taking into account all the proposals from the ISS program partners.

But Tikhonov is there...

Nice! Reminds me of STS-39. I Like the color scheme.

Carl here from ESA, just wondering who designed this patch (so I can update my copyright info on esa.int). Plus, Alex Gerst is getting a lot of questions about the unicorn — does anyone know the significance? Cheers.

Carl, wasn't Gerst the point of contact for this patch? It's been my experience that it's the commander who works with the artist.

Yes, but he's not telling us...

We respect that, but we still don't know the artist.

As someone elsewhere pointed out, Auñón-Chancellor is a lot longer than Epps. Be interesting to see how they update the patch for this.

No unfortunately not, that Expedition 57 (Epps) patch has now sold out at AB Emblem.

It has the patch design number 279891 A-B EMBLEM 01/1840 date code, (Made In China).

This one sold out much quicker than the other patches they have that feature old crew names. I wonder if someone bought out all their stock at once or if they just had fewer to sell? I am curious their stock numbers on the others because it does affect the "street" price if they have hundreds still in stock vs a few dozen.

Trying to glean any information out of anyone at AB Emblem since the changes in staffing, is near impossible now.

So far the only ISS-57 (Epps) patches they have sold are the ones manufactured in China with date code 01/1840. According to Robert there was an earlier date code version manufactured in the USA 11/1720. Who has those? Probably the astronaut/cosmonaut batch of patches).

The AB Emblem Expedition 57 (revised six crew names, with Serena Aunon-Chancellor) has patch design number 291458 Made In China 03/18/40 date code, (so far). Also this patch has the old style embedded labels on them without the A-B Emblem "crown" emblem.

Why are AB Emblems producing these in China again? After announcing that their space program items would return to being "Made in USA," as they should be.

\Is it purely financial reasoning?

Why indeed? I have asked that question to AB Emblem but have not yet had an answer.

It looks like from early January 2018 AB Emblem have moved around 75 to 80 percent of their production of NASA patches from the U.S. to China, about 5 to 10 percent to Taiwan and the remaining possible 15 percent is still being produced in Weaverville, North Carolina. (That is all of the ISS 55 patch production runs so far).

Thanks Kevin. This is a real shame, NASA patches should be US made. Just doesn't seem right having them produced in China and Taiwan.

Another earlier (prototype) version of the Epps patch has the design number 278722 and date code 4/1755. The primary difference appears to be the color of the gray on the ship's mast and stern; it is lighter on the 278722 patch.

And the crown emblem, Made in USA version of the revised Auñón-Chancellor patch has design number 291458 and date code 2/18/20. Also of note, the revised patch is a half an inch bigger than the Epps version.

NASA Johnson just published the Expedition 56 crew portrait. Gerst is wearing the Expedition 57 patch with only five names (without Tikhonov).

As first noted under the Soyuz MS-10 mission patch thread, Nikolai Tikhonov has been removed from the crew, but the crew change has not yet been announced. Expedition 57 will be a five-person crew due to delays in launching Russia's Nauka module.

No John, not to the general public, only to their agents like Joe at Skyforce Space Patches. AB Emblem's website is well out of date unfortunately. None of the 'new' 2018 patches have been listed yet.

Looking at the revised Expedition 57 (5 crew names) 'patch' above, it is not an embroidered patch, or a decal. What could it be made of? To me it looks like a spongy plastic type material with the design screen printed on it?

I designed this crew patch with Alex Gerst art directing.

The spongy looking patch above is just a Photoshop texture added to give the illusion of a sewn patch. I have to do this on crew photos sometimes, because I have to add patches to the crew's blue flight suits before the sewn patches are done.

I add other patches, name tags and flags sometimes as well, because they did not wear them to the photo shoot or the items were not available at the time of the photo shoot.

Here is the Expedition 57 patch description (from the reverse of the decal):
Humans are explorers. We live on a cosmic island. Setting sails towards new worlds has always been our nature, and it is key to our survival. As soon as our ancestors learned how to build ships, they not only used them to sail up and down the coasts, but ultimately they set out to travel beyond the horizon, to discover new continents. The time of space exploration has just begun, a mere blink of an eye in the eon-long history of human exploration. And yet we already have successfully built great ships to sail the black heavenly seas, and we have dared adventurous journeys into the unknown.

The Expedition 57 patch is a tribute to human exploration. It depicts an explorer's ship leaving for the unknown as our early ancestors did, and is shaped like an arrow, heading out to new cosmic horizons. It highlights the purpose of the International Space Station as a world class science laboratory for the benefit of mankind and international cooperation, as well as humanity's flagship in space, preparing us for the amazing voyages ahead.

The Expedition 57 patch is dedicated to all those thousands of humans who make this journey possible through the contribution of their passion, hard work, and courage to one of the most fascinating projects in human history.

AB Emblem is now selling off its remaining stock of the outdated six-member crew Expedition 57 patch with Auñón-Chancellor and Tikhonov.

The five-member crew patch is also now available directly from AB Emblem.

I took this photo in Kentavr-Nauka-Russian firm producing onboard suits for the ISS crews. This is the patch Kentavr gets from NASA office in Moscow.
