collectSPACE Artists redesign Apollo mission patches 50 years after moon landingsTwo artists who specialize in designing space mission patches have partnered with NASA's official embroidered emblem supplier to produce a reimagined set of Apollo insignias to mark the 50-year anniversaries of the moon missions. Tim Gagnon of Florida and Jorge Cartes of Spain, who for more than a decade have collaborated on creating almost two dozen of the patches worn by NASA space shuttle and space station crews, are now working with A-B Emblem of North Carolina to offer the new set of 24 emblems. ...all 24 of the patches are trimmed in metallic gold thread, a nod to the Apollo missions' golden anniversaries, and are 5 inches (12.7 centimeters) across. There are also two larger "jacket back" patches. A 12-inch (30 cm) emblem that symbolizes all of the Apollo missions and an 8-inch (20-cm) patch that reproduces the Apollo 17 Spirit patch art. They are $45 and $20 each, respectively. |

This is something that I've dreamed of since my Dad and I attended the launch of Apollo 17 in December, 1972.I hope everyone likes it. |

Thank you Robert for the article: it perfectly reflects our spirit of collaboration and our intention to honor and thank all those who made possible the feat of the Apollo Program. And thanks Tim for allowing me, once again, to work with a genius. I hope you all guys and friends will enjoy these small homage. |

Beautiful work. I love the subtle additions to the original designs. Can I ask why, on the Apollo 12 spirit patch, does Charles Conrad have the red command stripes on the suit? Didn't these first come into use on Apollo 13? |

A few notes from A-B Emblem: - All the regular patches are 5" and $10 each, except for the Apollo 14 mission emblem, Apollo 14 spirit emblem, and the Apollo 16 spirit emblem. These three are 6" diameter and $12 each.
- The Apollo Mission Back Patch (12") is $45 and the Apollo Spirit Back Patch (8") is $20.
- The Apollo Mission Set (12 patches and 12" Back Patch) is $100. The Apollo Spirit Set (11* patches and 8" Back Patch) is $85. Purchasing the sets versus the individual patches is about a 40% discount. (*The Apollo 7 Spirit patch is available only from Walt Cunningham's website.)

Why is there no "spirit" patch for Apollo 7 on the AB site for sale but one is shown in the collection photo above? |

As noted above, Conrad did not have red stripes on his suit; it was precisely because the photos returned from the mission could not be identified as that of either Bean or Conrad, unless the two crewmembers pointed themselves out. Also, another nitpick, but I can understand it not being a direct quote and with little room to put it in: The phrase from one of the Apollo 13 crew after LM jettison was 'Farewell, Aquarius, and WE thank you.' |

Regarding the Apollo 12 "spirit" patch: I may well be mis-remembering (can't find a thread reference), but I seem to recall that when Tim and Jorge did this patch the first time around, they had a specific rationale for putting commander's stripes on Conrad... even though it wasn't historically accurate. I believe they collaborated with Ed Hengeveld as well. Perhaps the artist(s) could weigh in on this? |

Per the notes Tim shared with me: The Apollo 12 Spirit patch is inspired by Ed Hengeveld's and Alan Bean's paintings (with permission).Dick Gordon is shown in the A7L suit he would have worn on Apollo 18 (and did wear as backup CDR for Apollo 15). |

Ah, so that's meant to represent Gordon, not Conrad. Thanks Robert |

Ordered my set of mission patches today. Obviously because of the great work Tim and Jorge have done and my interest in Apollo. However, of note: While the article says "all" patches have the gold metallic thread border, Walt Cunningham's Spirit 7 patch does not. It is his patch and represents Apollo rising like a Phoenix, in memorium to Apollo 1. NASA did not approve this idea when proposed and we have the Apollo 7 patch we know today. Walt recently (a couple of years ago) wanted to create the patch initially proposed and did a wonderful job doing it. I have #120 in my collection and it does not have a gold border. |

All these patches have no white square embedded labels with the patch design numbers or date codes on them, but they do have the gold on black diamond shaped 'A-B Emblem Licensee Division 866-403-3788 abemblem.com' "Crown emblem" stickers on them. (Except the Apollo 7 Spirit patch). All these patches were manufactured outside of the USA in China. That has now been confirmed by Ashley. |

Thanks everyone for the comments. On the Apollo 12 spirit patch, that is indeed Dick Gordon in the suit he would have worn on Apollo 18. Walt Cunnigham's Phoenix patch doesn't have the metallic gold border because he still has about half the batch he ordered in 2013. I told A-B that we wouldn't produce any until Walt sells his inventory. He believed in me and loved the design so he'll be the only source. I'll let Ashley confirm where they're made. I had the chance to show them to Walt Cunningham, Jim McDivitt, Dick Gordon, Fred Haise, Al Worden and Charlie Duke today at Space Fest and they all universally praised the set. They genuinely appreciate people remembering what they did all those years ago. |
