ISS Expedition 52 mission patchThe International Space Station's (ISS) Expedition 52 begins with the scheduled undocking of Soyuz MS-03 in May 2017. Three new crew members will arrive shortly thereafter on Soyuz MS-05. Expedition 52 will be commanded by cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin with Roscosmos. His crewmates include fellow cosmonauts Nikolai Tikhonov and Fyodor Yurchikhin, NASA astronauts Mark Vande Hei and Jack Fischer, and Paolo Nespoli of the European Space Agency. The Expedition 52 insignia was created by NASA graphics artist Sean Collins. (Insignia as seen on Instagram.) |

I hope this is still an unfinished version because it would look much nicer if all names were in the same font (Eurostile Extended).

I would assume that was an unintentional consequence of the font: not all fonts provide multibyte or Cyrillic versions that render identically and the OS defaults to the closest font family that does. I run into this all the time when prototyping with non-standard fonts. I really like the clever integration of the "5" and "2". One of those, "I wish I thought of that" things. I like the design, it's contemporary and has a sci-fi feel, which I like. |

I worked on at least four Soyuz patches with the Eurostile Extended font and I always managed to use it for the Russian names as well. The font problems you describe (and which of course I recognize) should never happen with a final version, because the fonts will have been safely converted to paths by then. So let us assume this is indeed still a draft version. |

But why only four stars and not six — the number of crew members? The planets are too small and as for me "lost." I think I saw before a version of this logo with bigger planets. Could the designer show us this version please? |

Sean Collins prefered to spoil his own design removing big planets. It's a question of taste finally. But why only four stars? |

I have seen the final version, corrected just a couple of days ago. I can happily report that the fonts of all names will be the same - Eurostile is gone. No other changes. |

Here is the final version of the ISS Expedition 52 patch with all fonts the same, as mentioned by Erik (hoorenz). |

That's indeed what I saw, Moonbase Alphan. Speaking of which... It does remind me a lot of the Alpha Moonbase logo. |

One of the actual patches for the onboard Kentavr suits (front). For Kevin: Embedded label, 257516 "MADE IN USA" 07/1655. A couple of patches in this batch (version in background) have a small production error: these have less space for Misurkin's name, which is partially placed over the inner white line, except for the final two characters, which have shifted upward and end up behind the outer white line. Not a big deal, but maybe interesting information for people who document small variations of every patch. |

Many thanks Erik. I asked a senior manager at AB Emblem about the "55" at the end of the date code. This is their reply. The code "55" means that it was ran here in our facility on our sample machine. It is a small machine used only for samples prior to the approval of a design. All other ISS-52 emblems will have a date code ending in "20". |

Kevin, let me make a small amendment to that statement: All others should have a product code ending in 20, 20 being the USA Country Code. However, if we need to produce a large order quickly, we may utilize our sample machine as well as our standard production machines, in which case the product code of those emblems would end with the sample machine code "55". |

With Alexander Misurkin's crew reportedly moved a couple of flights to the right, this will probably no longer be the Expedition 52 patch. Most likely, this design will be used for the patch of Expedition 54. It must be quite a challenge to do the same trick with a 5 and a 4... Very interested to see how this will turn out. |

Put a vertical, blue-outlined bar behind the ISS, making it the downstroke of the 4? |

I have been told by AB Emblem that as well as Expedition 52 and 54, the patches for Expedition 51 and 53 will also have to be redesigned or updated due to all the proposed crew changes. |

Yes, old 53 patch will become 52. Old 54 will become 53. Old 52 will probably become 54.

Two more different date codes have been bought to my attention for this ISS-52 new design patch. Both were produced on the 'Sample Machine'. They are 268382 Made in USA 11/1655 and 12/1655.An image/photo of these two patches together is available on request. At this time the patches are not mine. |

Has anyone heard if there is a modified Expedition 52 patch ready to go if Peggy Whitson's stay on ISS is extended to September? There has been some indications on some recent space articles that a decision on the extension is coming one way or the other. |

The cake is eaten without Peggy... And apparently she has good prospects to stay aboard up to September and land with Yurtchikhin and Fischer. Do anybody know would be new patches with six names ready before the MS-04 liftoff?

Peggy Whitson is now officially an Expedition 52 crew member: NASA and the Russian space agency Roscosmos, signed an agreement to extend Peggy Whitson's stay on the space station into Expedition 52. |

There is a high probability NASA will deliver to Baikonur a new Expedition 52 patch with six names (with Whitson) and it'll be on the crew's training suits tomorrow just before their liftoff. Let's hope it'll be like that! |

It's strange, at the press conference in Baikonur, Yurchikhin had a new six names version of the ISS 52 patch but Fischer was still wearing the five name version. Different number of stars and the moon is different on the six name patch, too.Do somebody has a good picture of this new version? Share please! I feel it is a little bit bigger than the previous one. |

Maybe it is not AB Emblem embroidery...Fedor's wife arrived Sunday. Maybe she came with this patch for Fedor? Now we should wait to see ISS 52 patches on their Sokols tomorrow and on their on board suits after docking. Hard to wait! |

It appears that both Yurchikhin and Fischer wore five-name Expedition 52 patches when they came aboard the space station. |
