ISS Expedition 48 mission patchThe International Space Station's (ISS) Expedition 48 begins with the scheduled undocking of Soyuz TMA-19M in March 2016. New crew members will arrive shortly thereafter on Soyuz MS-01. Expedition 48 will be commanded by NASA astronaut Jeff Williams. His crewmates, all flight engineers, include: Roscosmos cosmonauts Aleksey Ovchinin, Oleg Skripochka and Anatoli Ivanishin, Kathleen Rubins of NASA and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Takuya Onishi. The ISS Expedition 48 insignia was designed by artists Tim Gagnon and Jorge Cartes working with commander Jeff Williams. |

This is what was known before as the TsENKI patch, only TsENKI no longer orders and distributes these patches. Now, it has been ordered by Roscosmos, from the same manufacturer, so same quality of embroidery. A small number were produced for VIPs. Got the picture from a friend in Moscow, who also pointed out to me that there is a mistake in the name of Rubins... New ones will not be produced, though. |

Got information many Russian made ISS Expedition 48 and TMA-20M patches were distributed in Baikonur for NASA people. Brochures too.Roscosmos ordered 150 patches of each modification. The same for pins. |

Does anyone know if there is a description of the Expedition 48 patch design? One of my favorite aspects of patch collecting, other than the patches themselves, is understanding the meanings behind each of the patch designs – the kind of information usually found in a description of the patch. Up until recently NASA was providing descriptions with each of the mission insignia images posted at their flickr site, but they seem to have discontinued that practice beginning with Expedition 46. Thanks in advance for any help. |

As one of the designers of this patch I can offer you what we intended to portray. This design was actually inspired by two things. First and foremost the Expedition 22 patch that Jorge and I also designed, secondly the beautiful night time photography we been treated to from the ISS. Jeff Williams was the commander of Expedition 22 as well. That patch showed the Sun shining brightly through the solar arrays over a daylit Earth. We wanted to show the opposite - the moment before orbital sunrise. The crew wanted to add the six rays of sunlight. Honestly I didn't think they were necessary. |

Thanks Tim - that is the type of information I like to know.I don't know how others feel about it, but as far as I am concerned knowing the story behind the patches makes collecting them much more interesting. |

Credit: NASA The Expedition 48 Crew Patch depicts the iconic solar arrays of the International Space Station glowing in the sunlight with a star-filled sky, the Moon and Earth’s backlit limb in the background, showing the thin atmosphere protecting planet Earth. Six stars connected to the glowing sunlight represent the six Expedition 48 crew members. |

This is the NASA description I find associated with the patch at the JSC website. Somewhat different than the above:The 48th Expedition to the International Space Station (ISS) marks nearly 16 years of continuous human presence at the orbital outpost. The elements of the crew patch include ISS solar arrays illuminated by the setting sun, the Earth’s horizon at sunset, the Moon, and stars. The simple portrayal of the unique vantage point signifies the incremental contribution of a single international expedition off the planet to the larger endeavor of human space exploration and discovery. |

Besides the Expedition 48 patches with the error of the missing stars, another more significant manufacturing error has come to light on these patches. The use of the "wrong colours" of yellow, orange, and brown were mistakenly used on a batch or two, or even possibly the whole production run of these patches last year. The date code used for them was 06/1520. The yellow for the text, stars, and Moon is slightly darker. The orange and brown are slightly lighter than on the approved official Expedition 48 patches. Ashley could you shed some more light on this error? Maybe also post a side by side image/photo of the normal and error thread patches? Not to be mistaken for Tim Gagnon's slightly larger (4.5") "artists" version of this ISS-48 patch with the four additional coloured threads used in the overall design. |

Kevin, this manufacturing error was actually created in 2015, I have just now found the emblems in our storage. The date code on the back of these emblems is 06/15 20.

Many thanks for the conformation of the date code of 06/1520 on the error batch(es)/production run of Expedition 48 patches. Also many thanks for the two photos of the error patch at the top, and the correct colours patch at the bottom. The actual crew flown patches were taken from this production run 06/1520. So it looks like the crews were or are wearing the error patches for the flights and on board the ISS? |

Wow, you need to have some very good eyes to see this... Not sure if this is a production error. Thread colors are always varying a little bit from time to time. I believe that yes, the patches on the onboard Kentavr suits are the dark yellow variant. |

I never saw the white letters patch before. It's more faithful to the original artwork... |
