As I’m sure you all know on the request of Jack Schmitt space artist Robert McCall created a mission patch for Apollo 17. The patch featured the moon over Stonehenge. I thought it very effective. For me Stonehenge represents man's struggle to understand the universe. Sadly the patch was rejected, I don’t really know why.However I was able to use Jack Schmitt’s idea to create a class logo for my 6th grade astronomy students in San Anselmo, California. Jack if you’re reading this thank you!  |

Super job Gordon. By the way, the Stonehenge theme was rejected because the design chosen featuring Apollo and the Eagle was deemed more encompassing of the mission and program.But I love Stonehenge and hope to incorporate it in a crew patch or commemorative one day. |

I happened across the Stonehenge design by chance and I'm glad I did. The other ideas I was working on didn't seem quite right. The artwork on this patch was drawn by Galileo and was the first image ever published to show craters and mountain rangers on the moon. However the book it was in was banned and hence the image was banned as well. Do you really want to use a previously banned image in a Catholic school? I don't think I do. (Too bad the Apollo astronauts never used this drawing for their mission patches.)  |

San Anselmo's claim to fame is that it's the birthplace of STAR WARS. The statue in the town square is not of a civil war hero but of Yoda. George Lucas himself christened it. I wanted to show the statue but somehow Yoda ended up looking like Godzilla attacking Tokyo.  |

Does anyone have a high resolution image of the Apollo 17 Stonehenge mission patch or do you know where I can find one. Thank you in advance. |

No such patch exists. The late Robert McCall drew up partial sketches for it, but it was never completed. The sketches can be seen at the bottom of the page here, but for higher resolution scans, you would need to contact McCall Studios, as they own the rights. |

I believe the late Randy Hunt made reproductions of the design. I think I have such a patch somewhere in my collection... |

Hunt took McCall's artwork without permission and created a fantasy Apollo 18 patch. Our of respect for the late Bob McCall and to space history in general, I sure wish all of those patches would be destroyed (but I know that won't happen). |
