I've launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of a two-piece STS-61E replica patch and STS-13/STS-41C "Black Cat" patch. The Black Cat patch is being produced with the gracious permission of the the Scobee family. Each patch will be limited to 50 patches each. Thank you for your support! |

Pledged! I was really happy with the Basset/See and Pegasus patch, which arrived last week, so I'm definitely supporting this one! |

Am I missing something? Where's the option for pledging two of each patch? |

Well, that didn't take long. But, I'll ask again: Is there no option for more than one of each? |

I am in for the Black Cat patch! I will wait and see what the demand is for the 61E and will buy one if there are left-overs since I already have one of these... I want as many as can to be able to get in on this in some way. |

I was considering increasing the number of patches produced to 75, however, the amount produced will remain at 50. I have added a stretch goal to the campaign for a GTA-6 replica patch if that funding level it is met. Thank you for the overwhelming support this round! |

I pledged for my STS 61E patch!!!I missed out on pledging for the STS 13/STS 41C patch; I thought this and the STS 8 "Eyes" patches were the best alternate patches for each of the missions. |

With your purchase you have tipped the funding goal over the stretch goal ($1250)! That means everyone who has pledged will receive a GTA-6 replica patch as well. The GTA-6 patch will be the version the crew wore on the first launch attempt that depicts the spacecraft and the Agena docking module. Thank you again to everyone for their pledges. I wish I could increase the limits of the Black Cat patch, but I have an agreement that only 50 will be produced, so if you missed your chance to get one, I apologize for the small number. |

How is the final design and ordering process going right now? Originally it was said that they should be coming out at some point in July, will that still hold? |

I'm still working with the embroiderer to nail down the right colors for the Black Cat patch. I anticipate seeing the first samples this week. There's been a slight delay (about a week) because they missed my original email that told them to move forward with the order. |

Over the last few days I have received two e-mails from (apparently) the Kickstarter site asking me to send them info so liembo can send the patch I paid for. The link to enter the site from those e-mails is NOT working. Is something up...?I think he already has shipping info for us. Just making sure someone isn't trying something here. |

It's a "survey" that Kickstarter uses to gather email addresses for shipment of the product. You should be able to add that information via your account on Kickstarter.com as well. |

Hmmm... The black cat does not even come close to the original, it looks as bad as Randy Hunt's version. For 61E, was silver thread used for the names of the crew? The original has white thread for the crew names, only the word ASTRO-1 has silver thread in the original, that's a miss... |

I think the Black Cat is as good as you can get it in modern age embroidery, without Shiffly machines. |

I love them all and greatly appreciate Liem's efforts. I took his survey for the next project on the RE website and voted for the Gemini 5 souvenir replica next, but it is a tie with the Apollo 7 crew with white twill. I look forward to them getting kicked off. I shared with Liem my personal request as a collector for a replica of the Apollo 15 silver and/or gold "XV" crew patch and possibly the Apollo 8. The Apollo 8 may prove to be very difficult to recreate the segments on the Earth globe as that capability may be gone. Those happen to be the only Apollo crew patches I have been unable to acquire to date. |

The colors are off a bit in the photos, but the background of the Black Cat was as close as I could get with modern thread colors. The green/blue was just not attainable. As for STS-61E, the silver/white lettering is my shortfall, I had no physical access to an original patch and based on the scans I could manage to find, even multiple angles, they appeared consistently silver. "As bad as the Randy Hunt version"? Ouch. Here's a side by side (click for larger): I show two originals in that image because they were photographed at different angles, which has an influence on the thread colors used on the details.
I do appreciate any and all feedback, however. If the general consensus is as negative as Mr. Oene's, I will likely stay out of the replica game going forward. |

I appreciate the efforts of people who do these patches, and it should be noted that these are replicas, not exact duplicates. Sometimes matching colors/stitching methods cannot be found, so only the next best thing is available. It is certainly a painstaking effort, and should be applauded, especially by those who do not have money to spend on expensive or rare originals. |

I don't know about the Black Cat patch but the STS-61E is by far the best replica made to date and looks great. The GTA-6 is also very good. Modern machines and techniques lead to stitching that looks a bit too neat compared to Gemini-era stitching but there's really no way around this.In terms of thread colors, I know from personal experience that even with an original patch in front of you and huge books of thread colors it can be impossible to get exact matches and even when you find something that looks perfect in a thread sample book the end result usually looks slightly different. Without an original to work from you just have to take a best guess and judging the original colors can be very difficult indeed as lighting angles can make colors looks completely different. I don't think it's reasonable to expect a replica to look indistinguishable from an original, nor would you necessarily want that to happen anyway. A good looking patch that's very close to the look of the original should be the aim and I think Liem's nailed that with the STS-61E. |

Got mine! VERY happy! Thanks Liembo!I think liembo did an excellent job! The cooler gray of the background of the original was, as I expected, the hardest part to reproduce, but lighting affects that a lot. If the patch is viewed indoors under the warmer (redder) lighting which is a staple today, it may make the grey background look a little warmer than the original. Greys, blues, and blue-greens are almost IMPOSSIBLE to reproduce or standardize. I have seen pictures of the Hunt replicas and they don't look remotely like the originals. These are as spot-on as it can get. I would venture to say that these patches are closer to the original design than the average A-B patches of today are to designs they themselves executed back in the 70's. I have observed this pretty carefully. Look at an original A13 or A14 and compare it with today's. The machining is different today and I understand that. I am privileged to be one of 25 or so people to have this patch and I am very thankful for it. I (and most of us) will never be able to obtain an "original" so this was a special acquisition for me. I am tempted to go the route liembo did to obtain another obscure patch I want. Anyone else interested in the crew spoof STS-32 LDEF-retrieval patch (the "Killer Tomato" patch as I think it is referred to)? That is another one in the "Black Cat" spirit that I am sure is not commonly found- I have been back in the patch "game" for the last 4 years now and have never seen one anywhere. Just asking around... |
