ISS Expedition 47 mission patch

The International Space Station's (ISS) Expedition 47 begins with the scheduled undocking of Soyuz TMA-18M in March 2016. New crew members will arrive shortly thereafter on Soyuz TMA-20M.

Expedition 47 will be commanded by Roscosmos cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko. His crewmates include Roscosmos cosmonauts Alexei Ovchinin and Oleg Skripochka, NASA astronauts Tim Kopra and Jeff Williams, and European Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake.

The Expedition 47 insignia was designed by artists Tim Gagnon and Jorge Cartes.

"The crew wanted a simple design that illustrated looking up at the ISS as they approach in their Soyuz," Tim writes. "The patch is in fact a stylized Sokol helmet."

"The inspiration for this view of the station, why the Bat-Signal of course."

Thanks for flying my (Expedition 37 and TMA-09M) ISS drawing again friends, and even combining it with my original helmet idea. This is as close to designing an Expedition patch I ever came. I feel honored to have inspired two great artists!

Yes Erik, we are inspired by your project and I have to thank you for the aid in the update of the original Expedition 37's ISS. I also liked most the first '47' icon, but...

As I always say, cooperation makes great achievements.

An early AB Emblem sample patch that I saw also had these vertical gray lines in the solar panels, but they were dropped from the final product. I like this version very much!

Batch that will fly on the Russian Kentavr suits is 07/17 (produced mid July 2015).

The AB Emblem website does not show the Expedition 47 patch for sale. Anyone know the status of them selling Expedition 47 patches?

All I know is that there has been a delay in releasing these ISS-47 patches, but they should be available in about a week's or so time.

AB Emblem have just finished up-dating their website to show all the 'design' product numbers, and flight infomation for each of their patches currently on sale. (There are a few typo errors on some patches though).

AB Emblem should be releasing the ISS-47 patch on Friday 26th February. But it maybe slightly earlier by a day or two?

AB Emblem have used two different product design numbers for the ISS-47 patches.

No.242279 with date codes;

  • Made In USA 02/1520 (Rejected crew patches)
  • Made In USA 07/17 (July 17th 2015) (Crew and flown patches)
  • Made In USA 05/1520
  • Made In USA 12/2015
  • Made In USA 02/2016
  • Made In USA 03/2016
  • Made In USA 04/2016
  • Made In USA 10/1620 (old style label)
  • A-B Emblem 03/1840 (China) (new style "Crown Emblem" logo label
  • A-B Emblem Made In China 07/21 40

No.226655 with date code;

  • Made In USA 02/2016 (old style label)

It looks like AB Emblem may have abandoned putting the product design number, Made In USA, date code labels on the outer cellophane packets.

Originally, patches from batch 242279 02/1520 would fly on the Russian supplied onboard clothing. However, they were rejected by Kentavr-Nauka because of a small but noticable production error and replaced by 07/17 (which actually stands for July 17, their date of manufacture).

There now seams to be two versions of this ISS-47 AB Emblem patch. One has product design No. 242279 Made In USA and with date code 02/1520, and the other has product design No. 238923 Made In USA with date code 10/10 (10th October 2014).

The first is identical to all the other date code production runs, (as listed above). All with a laser cut edge.

The second, (a prototype), has a thick deep blue merrowed edge border, it also has blue/grey threads in both of the yellow solar arrays. (Like on the TsENKI version of this patch as seen above), and a different '4' without the bottom tail.

Erik, what was the small but noticeable production error on the rejected flight patches with date code 02/1520?

The most noticeable difference in the patch you just posted, apart from the grey lines in the solar arrays, is the 47. A couple of those were made following the original design. When Expedition 46 had to change because it looked too much like a political symbol, the 47 was changed as well (also at the request of Roscosmos).

You have a very rare patch there - I had only seen one so far (a prototype indeed). The one I saw, did not have a production code and did have a laser cut edge. There also is a sample version with the 'old' 47 which is larger than the final product. (I have seen two of those.)

The production error for which the first batch for the onboard suits was rejected, was actually that they did not have a perfect oval shape, but were badly skewed.

I have one of the ISS-47 patches with date code 02/1520 which came from Baikonur. Yes it is slightly a skew, but you would not notice unless you looked at it very hard.

I hope to have two of the above ISS-47 (prototype) patches coming from the seller in Las Vegas. There is possibly one other on its way to Liem B of spacepatchdatabase.com. He will receive his long before me. I will ask him to post a back image of this ISS-47 patch if it is one of the prototype version patches.

The single front and back patch is the one I have from Baikonur, and the four patches together are the two product numbers and various date codes, (not all).

This seems to implicate that these were rejected at Baikonur, or that the one shown here is one of the patches that was actually rejected, which is not the case. The skewed patches that were intended to go on the suits, were never sent to Kazakhstan.

In the part of the batch that Kentavr ordered, there were several gradiations of skewness. Some were reasonably okay, some others were pretty bad. Anyway, from the 25 that AB Emblem sent, it was impossible to find 12 good enough patches for the flight and backup suits.

If the skewed patch that you have came from Baikonur, it must have been from another part of that batch and probably ended up there early via NASA personnel or the crew, handing these out to locals. (Also, if it would have arrived at Baikonur via Kentavr, it would have been stitched onto velcro.)

Yes Erik, I have no way of proving that the ISS-47 patch with the date code 02/1520 I have was one of the 25 patches AB Emblem originally sent for use on the flight and backup suits. But that patch I have defiantly came from Baikonur, I still have the original packet it was shipped in. No paperwork though, just the e-mails with the seller.

I have removed the word 'rejected' from the post above so there is no confusion regarding this.

I would like to say many thanks for providing us with all the information on the history and the details of the patches used on the flight and backup suits (product numbers and date codes). Keep them coming Erik.

Unfortunately the patch I received is a standard A-B Emblem version, 242279 02/1520 on the back. I suspect that if Kevin bought the other two, he may have the version that he scanned for the auction listing.

I haven't received the two ISS-47 patches I bought from the seller yet. They should of arrived at the address I use in the U.S. So if my friend at that address is reading this post, could I ask you to send me front and back images/photos of those patches from that seller? Many thanks.

The two ISS-47 patches I bought from the seller in Las Vegas have now arrived at the U.S. address I use.

The top one is the prototype patch as shown above with product No. 238923 Made In USA 10/10 date code. (October 10th 2014). The other is another ISS-47 242279 USA 02/1520 that Liem received.

Another two earlier prototype example of this ISS-47 patch have been found. Both have the 'cut off tail at the bottom of the 4'. They both have the patch design number 238298 USA 10/02 (October 2nd 2014) date code.

All times are CT (US)
