Do you think an embroidered collectSPACE patch would be a good idea?

I have to say now that it's a project I'm not personally "gifted" enough to do but I know we have some brilliant artists on here!

Sounds like a great idea. I would certainly purchase one if available.

I've long desired a collectSPACE patch, but the nature of our (horizontal) logo and the designs that I and others have come up with in the past haven't been ready for production.

If someone has an idea for a patch design and wants to submit it for consideration, I'm happy to entertain proposals. Just e-mail me.

This could be a fun project as we could make suggestions which Robert could obviously decide upon.

There's nothing wrong with just the word 'collectSPACE' as a horizontal patch... think of it as the NASA worm or USAF letters worn either on the right shoulder of a flight suit or on the right breast of the flight jacket....

How about a contest?

We certainly have enough patch designers and artists in our midst that a contest could be fun, but there might not be a clear winner. It might be advantageous to combine ideas from separate submissions, or it might be that none of the ideas are acceptable (though I tend to doubt that).

How about this? If members/readers have ideas, e-mail them to me by May 31. I'll post them for everyone else to see, comment and vote on during the first half of June, so hopefully a patch could be ready for July 20, the site's 14th anniversary...

(If you desire the collectSPACE logo art for use in your design, e-mail me and I'll be happy to share it.)

Sounds good to me. A patch for the 14th anniversary on July 20th would be a wonderful way to say thanks for a great website.

July 20th... Isn't there another anniversary on that day?

As an update, I've already received one (very nice!) patch design and heard from another artist who is working on one.

Looking forward to seeing what others come up with...

Robert and I knocked around a couple of rough designs in 2006 but could never get to a finished design. As the different forums suggest, there are many facets to cS.

I look forward to seeing what others bring to the table.

How about a 2" black circular patch with white border and a small c and a capital s in white.

Those of us who know, know, and those who don't we could introduce them to this great website.

I would be proud to wear a cS on my patch jacket.

I think its best we wait and post all the designs received at the same time, so as to not pressure or influence others.

I agree.

Any idea for a deadline on that? I'd like to work something out but I'm swamped right now, might be a few days before I could render something, design-wise...

I suppose if one patch were not suitable elements, ideas and designs could be taken from several?

The design I'm sketching out has exactly that in mind...if members like the concept, it's very amenable to "tweaking" and group input.

I am very happy to share the 10 designs received by readers and members for a collectSPACE patch.

These are presented without artist names, so as not influence or sway opinions, and perhaps make it more comfortable if others want to suggest changes or refinements.

Some of the 10 are variations on another design by the same artist. Some are in a more preliminary state than others, but if chosen, I'll work with the artist to create a production-quality version.

Feel free to share your opinions and suggestions. We'll commence a more formal vote soon, but for now, let's start with a discussion. Thanks!

The second one (b) needs a bit more "definition" to make clear that the large letter on the left is a "C." The way it is, it looks to me more like an "O" that is being intersected/looped over by the "S."

I know you said we're not voting yet, but that first design looks pretty perfect to me as it is!

Design (a) is really good but you might understand the earth and the moon as limitation.

My favorite is (g): plain design and all necessary informations are shown.

The space patches we all collect are filled with symbolism and icons that tell the story of the mission, spacecraft or team represented on the patch. Given the diversity of collectables in our hobby, I think this would be very hard to accomplish on a collectSPACE patch.

Therefore my favorite is G. It's a very nice rendition of the existing logo, and it should be easy to reproduce crisply. My .02

Man, I really wanted to enter a design but I totally ran out of time...

That said, I like A a lot.

But shouldn't the winning design say, "collectSPACE.com"?

I think there is good reason to include the ".com". collectSPACE is nothing if not online. The blogging nature of the site is the essence of what cS is.

That said, I like A and I. "I" is more stylized and includes some good symbolism. Perhaps the red line could be considered the "online" portion. Fun stuff!
