Does anyone have a close-up photograph they could share with me of the patch emblem carried by Valentina Tereshkova on the left breast of the lightweight blue suit she wore under the orange pressure suit on her Vostok flight?

It's in the Museum at the Gagarin Training Centre and I've had it described to me, but I'd certainly like to see it for myself. It is described by many as featuring a dove, but when I asked Tereshkova in Coventry she was quite emphatic that it was a seagull - her call sign.

It is most definitely a dove as it has the olive branch in its beak!

My curiosity was aroused because I spent a lot of time chatting with Valentina and Museum Director Elena at Coventry in October, and I specifically asked why she had a dove embroidered onto her track suit when her call sign was Seagull.

Both Valentina and Elena knew exactly what I was asking, as I had an STS-114 mission patch on the shirt I was wearing, and we spent a bit of time in friendly discussion about it. But both of them were adamant that the bird carrying the olive branch on her patch was a seagull.

Now I'm no ornithologist, but if that's not a dove on her patch then I'll give up.

On edit: Valentina told me it was put together as a surprise by two ladies in the spacesuit design area. This could be where the problem originates — they might have made it a dove, but when Tereshkova flew with the new callsign "Chaika" (Seagull) she may have adopted it as that species of bird. In training she was called "Birch" and another of the women cosmonauts, perhaps Solovyeva, actually had the callsign of Seagull.

Fifty years ago, first woman to fly in space wore world's first mission patch

Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, who 50 years ago this Sunday (June 16) launched aboard the Soviet Union's Vostok 6 mission, set a world record by becoming the first woman in space. But her gender wasn't the only contribution that Tereshkova made to the cultural history of space exploration — she was also the first to wear a mission emblem on her spacesuit, although it was hidden from view.

Now half a century later, a Dutch artist is set to bring that patch into the light — and to the public — by producing replicas.

Fyodor Yurchikhin and Aleksandr Misurkin had the patch with them during their June 24, 2013 EVA. It was attached to the pressurized container they carried with them, flanked by two VKD-33 (Russian EVA-33) patches.

My patches arrived today, and I must congratulate Jacques on his excellent work.

The full size version in particular has a real vintage look and feel to it. The half scale (quarter area) is also lovely but does look very small in comparison.

I too received my Tereshkova patch, the half size, and Jacques definitely out did himself on this!

Looking at the EVA photos from 24 June it would appear that Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin, (Expedition 36 flight engineer) had the patch on his suit. Take a look at NASA photos ISS036-E-011479 | 11480 | 11481

Correct! It is the small version, which we specifically prepared for Fyodor to wear on his Orlan suit. The large version was on the pressurized container — which was a surprise for us too.

Please let me remind you that it is Luc van den Abeelen who deserves all credits for these reproductions.

Received my full-size and half-size patches today. Absolutely fantastic work. Thanks!

I guess Tereshkova was a petite gal, the full-size is maybe an inch or so smaller than what it looked like in her flight suit pictures.

The first time I saw those pics I began hoping that someone would take up the challenge of getting replicas made. They were just absolutely must have. This patch is the first of the long line of space patches we all enjoy and the design is an incredible, vintage bit of history that evokes the Soviet spirit of the time. They really romanticized the beginning of the Space Age with their own unique style.

A large replica was presented by Zvezda to Valentina Tereshkova on June 19, 2013 in Star City.
