Does anyone know how many different variations exist of the Astronaut Foundation Memorial Space Mirror Patch? This is the one that includes all the names on the Kennedy Space Center Space Mirror. I know of at least different two versions, but I believe there may be more. |

I recently made two separate donations to the Astronauts' Memorial Fund, and received two very different versions of the current 6.75" 24-name patch.

I know of at least three different versions. The original patch. A second version that added Adams and Carter and then the current patch that includes all names now on the mirror. |

- The original dedication patch with 14 names was unveiled in May 1991 for the Space Mirror dedication.
- The first revision with 16 names was later in 1991 when Sonny Carter and Mike Adams names were added to the monument.
- The third version with 17 names came out in 1997 when Robert Lawrence was added.
- The fourth version with 24 names include the STS-107 Columbia crew and was released in 2003. As noted above the two 24 name patches are different because I made some of those for the AMF.
- The fifth version was released in 2020 when Michael Alsbury was added. You'll see that it is smaller because I was able to convince them that having two rows of names.
(I am selling my AMF collection on my eBay store over the next few days.) |

Tim, could you post a photo of version 5? I have an original patch with the 14 names. |

There were in fact two more AMF patch versions not released to the public. One of those versions with the original 14 astronaut names was flown on Space Shuttle Discovery on Mission STS-41 in Oct. 1990. That special flown patch had the 14 background stars in red-colored cloth fabric.Another slightly different patch design, or with colors used, had the 16 names with Carter and Adams included in a light or pale blue fabric. As it turned out that design did not go too well with a solid white background of the lettering for the astronaut names. I had forgotten why a light pale blue color had been used going way back to the early 90's. |
