Curious thing I noticed about the STS-29 mission patch. The original/early AB Emblem patch has a thin dark blue outline around the white border on the edge of the patch. Then I looked at the STS-29 crew photo and the patch that they are wearing looks like the current AB Emblem patch that only has the white trim around the edge of the patch and does NOT have any blue outline. So I am thinking is the STS-29 patch that is out now exactly what the crew wore as opposed to the original AB Emblem patch? I know the current one at least to my knowledge is made on their multi-head machines and the original using their Schiffli machines so I was wondering if anyone has anymore insight and can clear up the confusion? Thanks! |

My era original patch is embroidered on a very light gray background, which is visible because the STS-29 patch has a sewn border. The patch also has a very distinct 3D effect, caused by the radial embroidery technique in the blue background. One of the most beautiful Shuttle patches in that respect. The reason for switching to a blue twill in modern days might be that the blue center of the patch is no longer very densily embroidered? No idea, never gave the other version much notice. |

It's just the one AB Emblem sells now. The one that is out now has no dark blue trim or outline around the white border of the patch and the original one does. |

The patch below is an example of the original AB version, as worn by the crew (I believe) and as described by hoorenz & KAPTEC.I've not seen a version with blue edging but I don't really collect STS patches so may have missed some intermediate version produced some time after the mission and before the modern version. |

I picked this up on Friday, March 17, 1989 at the Edwards Air Force Base Gift Shop; Discovery landed around 6:30am on Saturday, March 18, 1989. Perhaps this is the closest we can get to "official."For kicks, most of the earlier patches that I have still have the price tag on them. Eric |

Voyager -You aren't crazy. I have the same STS-29 patch you were describing. I purchased mine during the time of the flight at the New England Air Museum in Connecticut. Tim |

Yeah, If you look on eBay there are a couple of those patches with the thin blue outline. I know the crew of STS-29 wore the one without the blue outline that is pictured above here. So there are two AB Emblem versions that came out at the time of launch then? Interesting. Thanks guys! |

I checked on eBay and found this one.Definitely not an original AB Emblem but a later or souvenir version, and exactly as I suspected: embroidered onto blue twill instead of light gray, to be able to have less denser stitches (and increase profits). A good example of a souvenir patch that can not compete with the original. Erik |

Yep, that's a partially-embroidered patch - cheaper to produce than the fully-embroidered version. If it was on sale around the time of the mission then it was probably produced by someone other than AB Emblem.

Hi Erik-That one looks like mine. I love how the seller says they were discovered in a warehouse and in circulation around 1983. Six years before the flight! Tim |

Yeah funny stuff! The current version that AB Emblem puts out does look very close to the original even the blue field in the background. Does the current one have a 3D effect also? |

Let's confuse everybody and make 2 versions! One with a blue outline and one without. No, seriously. I finished that one last year, using Illustrator CS7. |
