I was wondering if there is interest in the Grumman insignias for each manned Apollo lunar module, i.e. LM 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12? |

I'm currently in the process of producing patch versions of the Grumman LM decals. The idea is to produce patches that are faithful to the original decal artwork as much as possible, including the use of minimal color palettes and outline drawings, rather than updating these with colorful modern graphics. My intention is to create patches for LMs 4 through 12 but whether I create the full set or not will depend largely on whether I can break-even on the first few patches. If they sink without trace I obviously won't be able to afford to continue to the end. Anyway, the first patch has already been through the design and pre-production sample stage and should be available around the end of the year or early in the new year. |

LM8 Patches arrived today. Absolutely superb, Chris. I ordered two as I wanted one for the album and the second one is destined to be part of a framed display (when all the set arrives). If anyone is still sitting on the fence about purchasing these, don't hesitate further. You will not be disappointed and Chris's introductory offer on this one is excellent value.

For your info, LM-6 may arrive by this weekend. After that there's probably going to a month or so before the next is ready, which may be LM-7. LM-5, LM-9 and LM-11 are in various stages of pre-production, and I'll kick-off LM-4 sometime soon. |

Looks great, Chris. Given the complexity of some of Grumman's original artwork, I was a little concerned about how well it would translate to embroidery, but you and AB have done a wonderful job so far. Thanks again for making this happen! |

Edgar Mitchell (and Fred Haise) were lunar module specialists. It was they who worked closely with Grumman to bring the spacecraft up to scratch for manned flight.LM-8 evolved into the Apollo 14 Lunar Module "Antares." I suggested to Chris that he might consider sending Dr Mitchell a complimentary LM-8 insignia patch given his particular interest in that vehicle. Dr Mitchell was so impressed with the finished article he returned the compliment by sending the photo which he asked me to forward on to Chris. |

Thank you for your informative replies gentlemen. I think sending Dr. Mitchell the LM-8 patch was a great idea, and he was clearly delighted with the gift. My compliments to you both. |

I received the LM-10 patches yesterday and they are outstanding! The attention to detail and the quality are second-to-none. And from the photo of the LM-6 patch above it looks like that one will be outstanding as well.I'm looking forward to the other patches in this series, especially the LM-4 patch and my favorite LM patch, the LM-7. Thanks Chris! |

There's going to be a bit of a gap before the next patch is available. LM-7 should be next up but probably won't be ready until late March. In the meantime I've been talking to the guy who actually came up with the design for the LM-10 decal back in 1969. I'll probably be posting a little article on that on the Crew Patches website in the next day or two. |

This is Ray Eschert, the guy who designed the Grumman LM-10 insignia, holding one of my replica patches alongside one of his original decals. You can read my article on Ray's time at Grumman, and the background to the creation of the LM-10 insignia, here: The Story Behind the Grumman LM-10 Insignia. |

I followed a link to Wikipedia's Apollo listing recently and found a rundown of all manned and unmanned Apollo missions, with patch designs (emblems) included. There was one there I had never seen before: Apollo 5 (first LM test) had its own patch and it was supposedly designed by Grumman engineers. It shows a LM in orbit (without legs, like the flight configuration for that mission) at the point of staging the descent module. It's a pretty neat design and I am wondering if anyone here was familiar with it? |

I detail the LM-1 patch on the Contractor Patches page of my Crew Patches website. This includes a list of sales from recent years, with the latest example fetching $345.Although it's not part of my current project, which is based on the decals that were never produced in patch form, I may consider producing a replica. It won't be easy to do as it's a busy design with pretty odd (to put it mildly) execution. |

Gene Dorr briefly mentions the LM-1 patch you refer to on the unflown patches page of his website.Apparently, the ascent engine of the LM was fired while the ascent and descent stages were still attached, which is why the LM appears to be exploding! |

Was there ever any consensus on the authenticity or lack thereof of the LM-13 logo (someone produced a nice looking patch, but there was some doubt apparently if that was based on a real Grumman logo)? |

I quite like that LM-13 patch but I've never seen decal artwork for that spacecraft. I suspect that this is a fantasy patch design created in the last few years. |

Was a drawing/decal ever made for LM-3, Spider? I saw a patch a while back and it was crude compared to the other drawings. I'm just surprised they didn't have one. |

My impression is that in patch/decal terms there was a divide between the Grumman staff working at Bethpage and those working at the Kennedy Space Center.Someone at Bethpage decided it would be good to have an insignia for the spacecraft they were working on and the LM-4 decal was created. This started a "tradition" of sorts so designs were created for each subsequent spacecraft. Over at the Cape, the Grumman staff worked with the spacecraft when they were delivered as part of an Apollo mission, thus LM-1 was a key part of Apollo 5 and it was likely someone at Kennedy Space Center who decided to create the LM-1/APOLLO-5 patch, and the Grumman KSC patches. This may have created something of a parallel tradition for the Grumman staff at KSC (which peaked at around 1,400 for Apollo 11), whereby Apollo patches were produced by/for the Grumman staff there for each mission. These limited run patches may include one of the rare varieties of Apollo 9 patch, and of course the "Grumman" Apollo 10 crew patch, the "Grumman" Apollo 11 patch, and so forth. It would only have taken one guy who was keen on producing patches, or maybe someone with a family connection at a patch company, to get the tradition started and to keep producing patches for each mission. This is all speculation but I think this explains why we see decals or patches for some missions and not others. |
