If you look carefully at "Countdown" footage, they used the dual launches of Gemini 11 for their movie. Now look at the boarding shots and you will see Pete Conrad's nose, and the fact that the Pilgrim One patch is based on the GT-11 curved patch.

How about a "real" space patch appearing in a sci-fi production?

Sol is an upcoming indie film that looks like a cross between Stargate and Lord of the Flies. Here, at least, the Constellation program isn't dead...

It's always a little kick for me when I spot "seen it before" patches and emblems in sci-fi shows. Just a few days ago, I was watching an episode of "The Outer Limits" (late-'90s version) set on a base on Mars, and among the emblems on the crew's jumpsuits was the STS-5 mission patch. Then there's patches that "migrate" from one production to another, like the Leonov joint mission patch from 2010 that Wash sported on his flight suit on "Firefly." Those are just a couple that come readily to mind.

I have a couple patches from Armageddon, such as the Freedom and Space Center Roughnecks patches. They were some high quality produced ones done about a year after the film came out. I don't recall anybody doing an Independence patch (at least not to the same high standard).

The Drax Enterprise Corporation patch from Moonraker has also been done. Given its similarity to the Rockwell logo, it is noteworthy, although the repos I've seen don't look so good.

Did astronaut Anthony Nelson wear a patch in, "I Dream of Jeannie"? I remember watching at least one episode where he flew a Gemini style spacecraft.

Also did Steve Austin, "The Six Million Dollar Man" have a patch? I know he was an astronaut and I believe he walked on the moon.

They never showed Steve Austin's moon walk in the original airing of the 6MDM pilot movie. What has aired in syndication used moonwalk footage filmed for the first episode of season 5 I believe. Launch footage was from "Rescue of Athena One" where he was placed into an Apollo capsule.

In the 2nd or 3rd 6MDM movie, Steve got smuggled into a building in a large case and when they opened it, he was wearing a jacket with practically all the Apollo patches on it, but they were the actual patches. I don't recall any fictional ones.

Only possible mission patch source I can think of in an episode would be from "Rescue of Athena One" where Steve had to go into orbit to dock with Skylab to rescue a trapped crew up there (starring his then wife Farah Fawcett Majors). Jules Bergman did a cameo in it. I don't recall specifically seeing a patch in it though.

I know of only one episode of "I Dream of Jeannie" (Season 5 Ep. 17 "The Solid Gold Jeannie") where Tony, Roger and the third Apollo crew member wore a patch. The episode dealt with Jeannie "blinking" her way into the Quarantine quarters post flight.

The patch was a rounded square with a white background. I've watched the preview clip a few tmes to determine details.

As for Steve Austin, I looked up that episode; "Rescue of Athena One" and the only (crew) patch I see him wearing during the "mission" is an Apollo 13 patch.

I was watching "2001: A Space Odyssey" today and noticed their space patches in a much closer way.

If you've seen the "2001" patches currently available both the Clavius Base and Discovery "field of stars" patches are rather dinky, about 2.5 to 3 inches and poorly made. On mine and others I've seen for sale something always appears off-center.

In the movie, the Clavius Base patches on the space suits appear large, maybe 4 to 5 inches. Regarding the Discovery crew, their patch on their spacesuits is about the same 4 to 5 inches, with the jumpsuit size perhaps 3 inches.

Provided the sellers of this and the other "2001" and "2010" patches have legal permission to produce these, you'd think they'd do it right, the way someone in this forum would (with permission of course).

Lee Majors' jacket in 6MDM features patches of Apollo 11, 16 on left chest, Apollo 8, NASA vector and Skylab project on left arm, Apollo 10 on right arm and Skylab 4 on right chest (in the book Cyborg, he was supposed to have been LMP on Apollo 17 before test flying the lifting bodies).

Apollo 12 also on lower front right.

(I remember all the kids in my street wanted one, this was a cool jacket... in the 70s!)

Some of my favorite fictional space patches come from 2010: The Year We Make Contact. Being this IS 2010 I haven't seen a peep about this great movie commemorating it this year. Anyone know of remakes of the patches worn by the US/USSR Leonov crew or a special edition of this movie?

I know this is an old thread, but there is an entire community devoted to recreating sci-fi movie costumes and such. Many of the named patches here have been made several times over. You can troll eBay for many of them.

I found a several vendors who make all the "Armageddon" patches (even though people only recognize the 'Freedom' patch as Bruce Willis' character wore that patch and was well shown in the movie, I doubt anyone would recognize the 'Independence' once). I have a correct NASA royal blue flight suit that I'm going to put those patches on for Halloween. Heck, I saw a real NASA employee wearing a jacket with those patches on it, at JSC a few years ago.

These vendors already make a lot of this stuff: SciFiPatch and Patches 'N' Pins (I might get one of the "Salvage 1" patches I just saw there) and SciFiGeek.

The "Sci-fi-hero" forum is a good source for such things and people who make those patches often look there.

Does anyone have an image of the patch worn by the astronauts in the 1969 movie "Marooned"?

Here's a picture of the Marooned Iron Man 1 patch. This is a production patch used during filming. Also, here's a photo of the Iron Man 1 sticker on one of the film crew hardhats. I found the patch in a small embroidery shop in Melbourne, Florida, that did work for the movie's on-location filming and I've been collecting odds and ends from the film ever since.

Thanks James and MOL! I too collect items from this movie. (my favorite). However I don't have anything with the patch design on it. I could never tell exactly what it looked like in the movie. There never were any clear shots of it on their suits or on the PAO's coffee cup. I wish I had one. Thanks very much for the picture.

Another possible patch candidate for this list would be the Churchill Halley mission patch from the SF horror film "Lifeforce". I believe I have a couple screen caps of it on my hard drive from the DVD.

I watched that on my cable on demand over the weekend to see if that patch shows up in any detail (yeah, that's the main reason I watched it, yeah... Anyone who's seen the movie knows why I was watching it) and there just was never a good shot of the patch that I could make out. Still, a British shuttle? I thought that was pretty silly when I heard that when it first came out and I was a kid.

I'd think there's got to be a website somewhere that mentions all the movie space missions.

I just scored a real "Messiah" crew shirt from "Deep Impact" and waiting for it to arrive.

So far, nobody seems interested in making a copy but it has been discussed at the ‘sci fi hero’ website, where many reproduction movie patches have been made. Frankly, the patch design isn't all that awe-inspiring.

Not great for Apollo, but better than some sci-fi patches. Does at least look plausible as a mission patch. I'm sort of partial to the name on the left side of the patch no matter the design so I want one. Yeah, no Nathan in my family either.

This would make quite an attractive embroidered patch, I think. I just wonder whether the side-inversed LM is intentional; a subtle hint this is not science fact...?

I think the main colors resemble Apollo 17 from what I can tell. Maybe that is a tip of the hat to the actual last Apollo moon mission. Who knows.

Now THAT is a score. I thought the Independence patch had a red background though (Freedom's patch was blue). Still, that is the first up close image I've seen of the artwork (all I have in my book is a black and white image of it and a couple blurry images of it on the replica LES suits).

I was bidding on a production made embroidered patch from the Apollo 18 production, but someone from Europe had much deeper pockets, dang it. But it IS a fact that they did make patches for the crew.

Wow, where did you see that? Wasn't on ebay... And it wasn't my pockets!

What's the provenance on it being a production patch, it doesn't look very true to the movie artwork - even the crew names are transposed...

It was on eBay a couple of days ago, selling for $62. Accompanied by bits and pieces that tend to corroborate its movie set origins.

Incidentally, I wasn't a bidder. Patches from fictional missions aren't my thing.

I've been trolling for anything related to that movie and this was the first film crew grouping I’ve seen yet.

Film crew items often seem to be a little different from the production screen-used items (someone in this thread earlier pointed out my "Armageddon" crew patch looks different from the ones seen in the film, and I agree with that), so I wasn't surprised to see the names in a different order than the screen capture from the movie itself.

I've all but given up on someone making a replica of this patch, which is such a shame. It's overall one of the most authentic-looking movie mission patches I've ever seen, even though it's a ho-hum design (as also pointed out earlier, in comparison to REAL Apollo patches, but not the other fake movie ones).

The TV series, "Space" version of the Apollo 18 patch is not nearly as well executed.

The patches below were supposedly used in a 70s movie (though it could have been a TV production) but for the life of me I can't work out what it could have been.

Many sci-fi productions used readily-available embroidered NASA insignia and cheap-looking custom-made mission patches but these are rather nicely made in beta-cloth style material with velcro fixings on the back.

I suspect that the cS readership includes one or two keen sci-fi film fans so maybe someone can help identify which production these come from?

Not exactly mission patches as such, but I thought I'd post them here anyway. I recently scored a screen-used "ISO" (International Space Organization) hat from the short-lived series, 'Defying Gravity':

I also have one of the astronaut candidate training suits from the show as well. I love the name of the character, "Santini," which probably is an homage to the Robert Duvall movie, "The Great Santini". There's the same ISO patch (but the compete one, note how it's different from the hat version) was well but no mission patch:

This is my screen-used USMC space fighter pilot's flight suit from the also short-lived FOX series, "Space: Above and Beyond" from a named character:

Thy are from the TV movie, "Earth II", ca. mid 1970s. The patch was the national flag of the orbiting space station/independent nation called Earth II.

The DVD is available from the Warner Archive.
