It looks like the design I sent in last December at least influenced the official patch. Oh well, win some lose some. I feel fortunate to get a swing at bat. |

One of the boldest ISS insignias I've seen, very nice! |

I just hope we don't have another crisis with names on the patches like we have at the moment with Expedition 17! |

Anybody else see a resemblance to the STS-113 emblem? |

Tim, I agree with Ed: I also like better your design. It's simplest and nicest but I believe this Exp. 18 is really a great artwork too. Congrats to the author/s. |

Influenced it! It looks like the whole idea concept was downright copied and rearranged! If George Harrison was tagged with unknowingly being mindfully influenced by "He's So Fine" when he wrote "My Sweet Lord", then I'd say something similar happened with your patch design. |

Thanks fellas for the good words. "My Sweet Lord" is one of my favorite songs and sounds great on my 12 string guitar.I'm not upset though. My problem with the design is artistic. The Moon would not look like that above the Sun. The lit part of the crescent would be facing the Sun not 90 degrees off, (the same thing on Apollo 11) And it DOES look too much like STS-113. When I was asked to send in some "simple and generic" drafts last year I treated it as "an audition" - to show what I could create. When I never heard back, I assumed the crew went in another direction. Obviously they like some aspects of my design and for that I'm grateful. Que sera sera. |

WOW!! The hi-res versions are out already! This is very quick! After reading the description of the patch design I realised how good it is, like the X, V, and III all meaning something... This emblem represents the eighteenth expedition to the International Space Station (ISS). Featured prominently is the Roman numeral XVIII. The "X" evokes exploration, which is at the core of the indivisible cooperation of the International Space Station partners. "V" is for victory and for the five space agencies in the ISS program. "III" stands for the hope that this crew will help evolve the ISS from supporting the last three-person crew to crews of six explorers and researchers. The moon, sun and stars symbolize the efforts of the entire ISS team, which will lead to the human exploration of the moon, our solar system and beyond. |

Does anyone know what AB is going to do with regard to Expedition 18? Are they only making the no name version, or will there be different crew name versions made as well, like Expedition 17? I'm just wondering if we have to start planning to order our own named versions again from AB. |

I suppose that part of the decision may rely on what the crew actually wears... |

I want to get all of the named Expedition 18 patches if it can be ordered like Expedition 17 was. I would again order all the Expedition 18 name patches. |

I contacted AB Emblem to ask about multiple named versions of the patch. Their answer was "EXP 18 will not have any crew names."I am looking into independent confirmation from other sources. So I guess we will have to wait until we see the crew on launch day. |

Fancy doing another mail order service for the named Expedition 18 patch? Just kidding! I just hope they wear no-names or all names - no 1 name, 2 name etc like with Exp. 17! |

Yes, the official patch design for Expedition 18 has no names, as confirmed to me last month before our decal stickers of the 18th ISS crew insignia went to the printing press. Our vinyl decal stickers, NASA/Space Flight Awareness approved, are also available for distribution now if anyone is interested in them. |

Fincke and Lonchakov wore patches without names on their Sokol suits for launch. |

At the World Science Festival in NYC on June 6, I didn't ask Sandra Magnus about it, but she definitely was wearing the patch with names on her flightsuit. |

A couple of ISS crews (Tim has the exact list) had their patches with names made by AB Emblem postflight. These were not made available to the general public, presumably because it was believed there was no market for them, or not to damage the sales of the no-names-patches that were already distributed. As you might know, Tim recently had a couple of sets made by AB for collectors. If you missed that offer, do not worry: we asked Tim to make some extra sets and we hope to have these available later this month. |
