Will Barbara Morgan wear any type of teacher in space emblem on her STS-118 mission, like the one used for STS-51L? Does NASA still use the Teacher in Space emblem or did they abandon the use of it? Also, does the 2004 class of teacher astronauts have a special emblem for themselves? |

No, Barbara Morgan will not wear a Teacher in Space patch as far as I know. That's not to say she wouldn't carry one or more in her PPK for the other Teacher in Space finalists. Remember she (as were the educator mission specialists in 2004) were selected as "full-fledged" astronauts as opposed to a "spaceflight participant."I would expect you'll see some type of homage paid to Christa McAuliffe as well as teachers everywhere during STS-118. |

You're right. You can clearly see elements of the Teacher in Space emblem in the STS-118 patch. The flame of knowledge and the overall shape. But I think Randy was specifically asking about the Teacher in Space patch as it appeared in 1986. |

It does make sense that she might not have a special patch since she has become officially an astronaut and no longer a flight participant. But the idea came to mind since McAuliffe did have one and it might be a little tribute to Christa and to celebrate teachers in space. In an interview on NASA TV, Morgan seemed excited to have the flame of knowledge symbolically shown on the STS-118 crew patch. |

I was also wondering, is the current AB Emblem Teacher In Space patch the exact version of the Teacher In Space patch as it was in 1986? Does anyone have any pictures of the Teacher In Space patch in 1986?Also, I saw a white bordered version of the Teacher In Space patch. I don't think that the white border version was around as a patch back in 1986. Does anyone have any info about this version of the patch? |

It looks to me that the differences is mainly in the coloration. The border in the 1986 version as well as the blue in the Earth look a shade lighter than the current AB Emblem version. Anyone see that too or is it just the way the lighting is for the pictures? Also I think the 1986 version has a cloth backing to it or something? |

Very interesting. Thanks for the pictures! I noticed that on the Teacher In Space patch that I have and even if you scroll up to the other pictures of the current version you will notice that the earth and especially the border is a darker blue than the ones you have. I wonder when they made the change of shades. I got mine in the summer of 2008. |

Can anyone tell me what patches were available for the 'Teacher in Space' project at the time of Challenger disaster (with participants Christa McAuliffe and backup Barbara Morgan)?More recently we have educator astronauts that include: Dorothy Metcalf-Lindenberger, Richard Arnold, and Joseph Acaba did any of them have a specific 'teacher' patch? Thank you. I saw one on ebay where the NASA worm at the bottom of the patch has been replaced with 'Barbara Morgan'. Editor's note: Threads merged. |
