Hi Robert,
any chance of the correct translation:
Explore/Exploration?
Disturb/Stir up?
Teach/Show/Point out?
Gratitude?
Will it be commercially available? I dont think they have been before so I dont suppose it will be, unless someone out there knows otherwise,
thanks,
Nick

Randy may have been a bit too quick to reproduce this design... the class of 2004 has modified their insignia. Image to be (re-)posted later.

46 of 142 of this nation's astronauts have not been in space, and who knows if any of this class will go up on the space shuttle before it's retired in 2010; God Bless Them everyone.

Hi all-

I took my 6th, 7th & 8th grade Young Astronauts to the 2004 ASCAN presentation at KSC yesterday. We met Joe Acaba, Chris Cassidy, Jim Dutton, Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, Shannon Walker & Aki Hoshide.

During the Q & A I asked about their class patch. Dottie was the coordinator who worked with the artist and made sure to incorporate ideas from her classmates. The astronaut pin is supposed to be silver and gold. In reference to the fact that when they complete ascan training they are awarded a silver pin and after their flight they are presented a gold pin. (as the illustration about looks white and gold, that might be the revision Robert was referring to).
The Earth, Moon and Mars refers to the vision for space exploration plan laid out by Pres. Bush last year. The constellation has 14 stars for each of them. I missed the name but it has a conitation to the story of Jason and the Argonauts.
And the latin words: Explorandi Concitandi Docendi Gratia. The meaning is, "We Come for the Sake of Exploring, Inspiring and Teaching".

I also asked Chris Cassidy about their nickname, "The Peacocks". He explained that they were called that by the 2000 Class because traditionally an announcement about a new class recieves very little notice in the media. Because of the Presidents new space vision & the fact that they have three educator-astronauts - they recieved alot of press. The peacock is a reference to the NBC symbol.

And that's the way it is...

Tim
Oh by the way the other eight members of the class were in Orlando for the science fair.

I would have except the event was "for school children". They were given first shot and the ASCAN had to leave before I made it to the head of the line. I'll write them though.

Yes, it changed however to keep replicas from being marketed as original (which is presently the case) I made the decision not to post it to the site.

So where do we buy the originals on the web? For those of us who can't drop in on Kennedy Space Centre gift shop.

Astronaut class patches are not intended for retail sale. If a collector is fortunate enough to find an original through an astronaut's estate or personal collection, than that's great, but not every patch is meant to be in plentiful supply. Part of the allure to collecting, at least in my opinion, is for there to exist at least some items that are truly rare in number and/or difficult to come by...

Hi Rob,
I'm a collector of manned space mission patches. US and Soviet/Russian. Not originals or flown patches. Just a replica will do for me.
As has been written in another thread, military patches have been reproduced with "Repro" stamped on the back. Why can't repro space patches be made for collectors like me with limited budgets?

If someone was inclined to make replicas and mark and market them as such, I wouldn't have any objection. It is the attempts to pass off reproductions as originals that has left me concerned.

The patch change appears to be in relation to how KSC is indicated on the patch. The original design had the trail of the astronaut symbol originating at KSC. The revised design has replaced this with a small gold star at KSC's location.

Full details can be found at the following NASA link.
