Given the season, I thought it would be interesting to ask if collectors here have any spaceflight or space exploration-themed snow globes? Are there any vintage examples from the 60s or 70s? I have one in my collection: a snow globe created by the Atlas V Business Development division at ILS/Lockheed Martin after the first launch of the rocket on Aug. 21, 2002. As a decal at the bottom notes, "This globe contains dust particles from the Atlas tanks." The globe has yellowed over time, the gold stars and "Atlas tank dust" has become somewhat stuck to the disc holding the Atlas V rocket model and the disc itself has become free of the bottom of the globe, so shaking it is no longer ideal. Still, it is a neat memento of a maiden launch.

We have two. The first is a lunar module on an F-1 engine-looking base with the Apollo 11 plaque embedded. It came from the Museum of Flight in Seattle. The second one is a NASA meatball, from the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium.

Here are the two space-themed snow globes in my collection. The first shows the lunar module and Apollo astronaut with the laser retro reflector. The bottom is marked "Made In Germany" and has white snow. I am guessing this dates from the 1970's but I believe this particular one was still being made well into the 90's. That is because I have two of them, and the other has on the bottom the recycle symbol with a number in the middle. I don't think those appeared until the 90's. The other is a classic "ship in a bottle" type with glitter type particles in the liquid and commemorates Apollo 11. It looks to be from around 1969.

Fred and Robert, those are great!Fred, I particularly like how the artist used the F-1 engine as a base. And Robert, what great vintage examples. I particularly like the dome for how quintessential it is to the classic form. | |
