SpaceX rockets and spacecraft will soon come with a new tag: Made by Mattel.

The global toy company has entered into a multi-year agreement with Elon Musk's commercial spaceflight firm to create and market toys inspired by SpaceX's launch vehicles. The first products under the partnership will be released in 2023 as part of Mattel's Matchbox line of die-cast cars, as well as through Mattel's collaboration and direct-to-consumer platform, Mattel Creations.

SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule is now a Matchbox die-cast model

After flying ten astronaut crews into Earth orbit, SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft is landing... on toy store shelves.

Matchbox, the classic die-cast toy brand, has released a miniature model of the commercial space capsule, which on Monday (May 22) brought the private Axiom-2 (AX-2) crew to the International Space Station. The collectible, which was not timed to the mission, is the first product to be released under a multi-year licensing agreement between SpaceX and Mattel, as was announced in July 2022.

SpaceX's Starship is now a Matchbox Sky Busters die-cast toy

SpaceX's Starship has launched into space and landed as a Mattel Matchbox toy.

The reusable spacecraft, which flew a mostly-successful second test flight on Saturday (Nov. 18), is among the latest additions to the classic toy brand's line of die-cast aircraft (and spacecraft). The Starship, along with two new SpaceX Dragon capsules and an upcoming Falcon Heavy rocket, are part of a multi-year licensing agreement between SpaceX and Mattel.

Mattel rolling out Matchbox toy of SpaceX's Tesla astronaut transport

As SpaceX's next commercial astronaut mission rolls out for launch, Mattel is counting down to the release of its latest Matchbox toy based on the space company's vehicles.

Unlike Mattel's earlier sets, which were modeled after spacecraft and rockets, this upcoming issue is more of a natural fit for the iconic line of die-cast cars. Matchbox's 1:64 scale version of SpaceX's Crew Transport Vehicle is set to arrive in U.S. stores on Oct. 1 for $1.25 each.
