Topic: Translating Cyrillic on Sputnik model

I received a Sputnik model as a gift, but I'm trying to understand part of the stylized lettering. I read Russian, but I can't figure out the stem that holds up the actual Sputnik satellite. It's not cccr in lowercase cursive, because there would be one too many "c"s. I don't think it's the letter sh, because it has four vertical strokes and what would the fourth one be? It could be two letter "i"s (which look like "u"s), but what would iir stand for? Any ideas out there?  |

My understanding the script is MIR, i.e. peace. |

Yup, I totally agree. Now that I've been looking at it for 5 minutes and a copy of the PROPER alphabet (my handwriting doesn't reach the level of PROPER), I can see that is a very stylized "m" and mashed a little too close to the "u" for the "i". |

By the way, there is a companion piece with a model of Vostok instead of Sputnik, and a larger Sputnik model with a musical box in the base which plays the "Internationale." |

These Sputnik models were sold in the Beriozka souvenir shops in the Sovjet Union. I bought mine in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) in September 1976 costing 70 Rubel Cents. The original box I still have in my collection.

Hah! For all of these years, I always thought of these models as being much larger than they really are. I was picturing a desktop model, not a miniature. Thanks for sharing the photos Rolf. |

By the way, I love the price that's still on the box (I received the box too as part of the gift from a coworker). 1 rouble, 40 kopecks - or $0.02 today! |
