I'm a lifelong space buff and I made this replica Mercury suit last year. I make all kind of space replicas. I'm currently working on an Apollo suit.

Nice! Now all you need is that chest mirror, a Mercury capsule mockup — and a stand-in for Guenter Wendt to shoehorn you in.

Great work, do you have any previous tailoring experience? Don't forget to post a photo of the Apollo suit when finished!

Way COOL. Judging by the glove zippers and the air conditioner you went by Shepard (MR-3). Would you like the parachute harness he used?

What watch do you have on?

Thanks! Yes, I modeled my suit after Shepard's suit because it was the simplest. I may do another one later that looks more like Glenn's. I've also seen the correct torso harnesses for sale on occasion, but they are way out of my budget.

I'm wearing a modern Breitling Cosmonaute. I've had it for 20 years now. They say Scott Carpenter wore one during Aurora 7, but I've never seen a clear photograph of it.

I completed my prototype Apollo suit. It's a fully wearable replica. Every part was fabricated by me. I'll be making the extravehicular components (LEVA, lunar boots and gloves, RCU, PLSS) next.

More pictures here (along with my Mercury suit).

Thank you so much! It means a lot to get the approval of some real space enthusiasts. I'm very happy with how this suit turned out, but I'm already in the process of correcting various inaccuracies for my next version.

Beautifully accurate. Can someone explain a question about Apollo EVA headgear? The clear bubble helmet goes over the "Snoopy Cap" then for lunar EVA's the LEVA helmet was added over the top I assume to protect the Bubble helmet underneath. Or was the LEVA worn instead of the smaller Bubble helmet. And which one or both were sealed against the vacuum of space. How did the neck ring work for both types of helmets?

The clear bubble helmet was sealed against the vacuum, and the LEVA was worn over the clear bubble... here's a link to Buzz's flown suit. Scroll to the LEVA and you can see how it was attached over the bubble.

The pressure helmet assembly ("bubble helmet") was sealed into the torso suit limb assembly via the neck ring. The LEVA was worn over the top and secured (but not sealed) at the base (I believe above the neck ring).

A slip on/off clear helmet shield was available to protect the PHA and can be seen in some pre-launch pictures if you look carefully. The LEVA had two visors (clear inner, gold outer) and three sunshades. The EMU AOH is worth a read.

Outstanding work by the way.

These are very awesome. You must be very proud, as I am jealous. How did you make the Apollo bubble helmet?

This is my effort at my 30th, ignore my drunk twin...

Thanks! The bubble helmet is vac-formed PETG. It's much easier to pull something that large in PETG as opposed to acrylic or polycarbonate (like the real helmets). The plastic is softer, but it's lighter weight and easier to get something optically clear if you're using homemade equipment. I also just listed this suit on eBay to anyone who's interested.

I love that Shepard suit, by the way!

I just wanted to post a picture of my last spacesuit replica I made for Adam Savage of Mythbusters. He is a huge space suit enthusiast. I made quite a few modifications to my pattern and parts since the last suit, so this one is even more accurate.

What is that now, two suits for Adam? Not counting any movie spacesuits he has.
