Astronauts get their own LEGO minifigures on space station

The astronauts and cosmonauts onboard the International Space Station now have three new crew mates who look a lot like them — only much smaller.

LEGO minifigures customized to look like NASA astronaut Terry Virts, Roscosmos cosmonaut Anton Shklaperov and European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti were recently revealed as being on the orbital outpost. The tiny toy space explorers were among the gifts the crew exchanged on New Year's Day.

Minifigs.me, which made the minifigures for the crew, is now selling them:
Did you know that all those LEGO space sets you own are missing something crucial? The minifigs aren’t wearing proper space suits! This minifigure wears a replica of the genuine suits used by astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station, so we have you covered! Originally commissioned for the crew of the ISS, you can order an American, European or Russian suit complete with accurate agency patch and flag. The originals LEGO minifigures we made are velcroed to a wall in the ISS right now – looking down on us as they pass over at 17,150 mph.

Last night, at their post-flight presentation at Space Center Houston, Samantha Cristoforetti, Terry Virts and Anton Shklaperov added their autographs to a shadow box display I pieced together using a duplicate set of the on-orbit minifigures (courtesy Minifigs.me) and the photo that the crew took in space as the backdrop.

Minifigs.me has produced — and launched — a tribute figure for British astronaut Tim Peake:
Did you know that all those LEGO space sets you own are missing something crucial? British Astronaut Tim Peake is missing! HOW COULD YOU?! This minifigure corrects the situation.

He wears a replica of the genuine suits used by astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station, so we have you covered! Originally commissioned for Tim Peake himself to accompany him to the ISS. The original LEGO minifigure is in the ISS right now – looking down on us as he passes over at 17,150 mph.

British astronaut reveals LEGO minifigures of his space station crew

Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko, the first astronaut and cosmonaut to log a year on the International Space Station, left a little bit – or rather a little version – of themselves on the orbital outpost before returning to Earth on Tuesday (March 1).

As revealed by their crewmate Tim Peake of the European Space Agency, Kelly and Kornienko had LEGO minifigures of themselves and their crewmates on the station, courtesy of the British astronaut.

"Farewell Expedition 46 – an honour and privilege to serve with such great crewmates," Peake wrote, sharing a photo of the LEGO crew – which in addition to Kelly, Kornienko and himself, also included minifigures of NASA astronaut Tim Kopra and cosmonauts Yuri Malenchenko and Sergey Volkov of Roscosmos.
