Someone showed me Revell's Boeing 747 SCA & Space Shuttle earlier today. The first launch of the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft 905 — a converted Boeing 747-123 passenger aircraft - with the Space Shuttle Enterprise attached to its back took place in 1977. During five test flights the space shuttle was disconnected from the SCA 905 in order to test the flight and landing characteristics of the orbiter. The Enterprise landed of its own accord after its approach glide. By the end of the Space Shuttle program the American National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) had conducted more than 220 piggyback missions with the SCA 905. During its last missions, the Discovery, the Enterprise and the Endeavour were transferred to various museums. On 17 March 2012 SCA 905 landed at Dulles International Airport with the Space Shuttle Discovery. The Space Shuttle is now on permanent display in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington. |

Nice, but only decals for Discovery and not the other two transported shuttles? And what do they mean by markings for the "last mission version" for the SCA? If they do include the markings for SCA piggyback flights below the cockpit, they must be very small! |

I purchased a number of the kits and the decals are only for the Discovery orbiter. The kit is a re-release of the original Enterprise with 747 from the late 1970s with a new very nice decal sheet, it has been re-released previously in different guises. The decal set is very comprehensive for both the Shuttle and 747 (N905), May 2012 and does include very small Silhouettes of carrier flights just above the blue passenger window line close to the forward passenger doors. The kit builds into a very nice replica with a little bit of work, especially on the orbiter mounts. If you wish to build the kit in the original modified American Airline livery, which I still particularly like, decals are available. Additional shuttle decals can be purchased from RealSpace. |

To follow my previous post I found that copies of the instructions and new decal sheet for the new release have been posted at AirlinerCafe. |

The Draw decals are amazing. I just restored my original 747 and Enterprise and they look great. I got the other set and found another kit on ebay. And of course they re-issue it now after I spent so much on the second kit. |

About the decals — as has been indicated, Revell confirmed that the kit will only have decals for Discovery. I was really hoping the delay in the kit's arrival in the U.S. (it was originally supposed to arrive in October) might be because they were reprinting the decals after all the coverage Endeavour got, but, sadly, that was not the case.So if you are planning to make the orbiter into one of the other shuttles, you might want to order decals from RealSpace now, before the kit is released and their stock sells out (although I would imagine they can reprint them easily enough). If worst comes to worst, there's also the option of printing your own decals. Google turned up lots of stuff on how to do that. I understand NASA used the font Helvetica for the names printed on the sides of the orbiters, although I don't know what font size you would use for 1/144 scale — you might have to measure it from the size of "Discovery" in the Revell decals. |

Does anyone know if there are any decal sets available for 1/144 shuttle/SCA models? The RealSpace Models' one, which would be perfect, is sold out at present. I bought the Revell kit, but it only has decals for Discovery and the later 905 livery. Any help appreciated. Editor's note: Threads merged. |

Draw Decal makes the original AA and new NASA liveries for the SCA. If the search link doesn't work, type 747 shuttle into the search box.I used the AA livery on my SCA/Enterprise model.
