collectSPACE Keypad used to land Apollo on the moon shrunk down to work as wristwatchWhen NASA's Apollo spacecraft launched to the moon, it had on board two briefcase-size computers that for their day would normally have required enough floor space to fill a couple of rooms. The compact devices were small, but had enough processing power and memory to guide the astronauts from the Earth to the moon. Fifty-five years later, the British start-up Apollo Instruments has been able to shrink the Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) even further — to the size of a wristwatch. Now, anyone can wear the display and keyboard system, or DSKY (pronounced "disk-key"), that astronauts used on the command and lunar modules. |

This is very cool but a little spendy. I would like to have one but $800 is a bit far for me. I hope they come down. |

Pretty cool but for that price I would expect a life-sized one.On a side note: why is this (and other watches) listed in "Hardware & Flown Items: Remove after flight" and not under "Toys and Models"? Maybe a merchandising section would be an idea? |

I understand the comments about the price, though if you think about it, recreating a full-size version should be less complicated today (and therefore less expensive) than being the first to miniaturize it further to fit on your wrist and still be faithful to the original. As for why this thread is here: generally, this forum has been about real hardware, working replicas or later reissues of equipment used in space. Models and Toys has been about build-your-own, for-display or clearly play-intended reproductions. |
