collectSPACE 'It's bananas': Toy fruit becomes first zero-g indicator to fly on SpaceX StarshipAn artificial banana floated peacefully in the microgravity environment of outer space on Tuesday (Nov. 19). No longer needing its attached tethers, it just hung there, suspended in the bay of its steel spacecraft's otherwise empty cargo hold. The fake-but-full-size fruit made history as the first zero-gravity indicator to fly on a SpaceX Starship. |

Over the past couple of weeks, Chiquita has been teasing on X a "classified" project having to do with SpaceX. Recent posts showed their Banana Man and Miss Chiquita mascots showing up at Starbase. Speculation on Reddit and elsewhere online included SpaceX flying tons of real bananas on Starship IFT-7 or Chiquita was making an early delivery the plush bananas that SpaceX has been taking pre-orders for in its shop. Today, Starbase general manager Kathy Lueders revealed the secret: Thank you Chiquita for the special donation to Starbase and Food Bank of Rio Grande Valley. A great way to celebrate our recent Starship flight test!
It would neat to get one of the boxes (once emptied) in which the bananas shipped. They are marked "(For Scale)" and "next stop, outerspace!" as well as have the Flight 6 mission patch [which, itself, was a parody of Chiquita's banana label].) |

Chiquita also created special labels for the bananas it donated. The stickers were based on the IFT-6 mission patch but included Chiquita's name, too. (via X) | |
